I used to be a fan of this restaurant. I had a reservation that I had to cancel 2 hours in advance because my friend tested positive for covid. They charged me $365 for cancelling, and this policy was not clear on their website. I have never experienced a restaurant charging such a high cancellation fee and especially not being understanding of this situation. You would think they would rather not have you show up with covid and infect their staff. They said they would put the $365 cancellation towards a meal if I rescheduled in the next two weeks, but I live in NYC, so I guess I am left with refuting this charge on my credit card. I even supported this restaurant in the early days of covid and this is how they treat customers. I even tried to drive 1 hour out of my way and change my plans in order to reserve within a week and they aren't even open Mondays or Tuesdays. You would think they would have a little more understanding here...

This restaurant charged me over $300 because I had to cancel due to a positive covid test...ridiculous.

      1 check-in

This review was almost a 4-star because of the beginning of our night, but the food speaks for itself and it's truly unreal; the food alone deserves 5 stars and more.

We were about 20 minutes late to our reservation and they had given our table away by the time we arrived. This honestly put a bad taste in my mouth because:

      1) we called them continuously from approximately 8:12pm until 8:48 (our reservation was at 8:30 and we were stuck in heavy traffic driving through SF on Lunar New Year -- I checked my phone after dinner and I made a total of 20 calls to them between that period of time) and not one single person picked up the phone. I understand being busy, but not picking up a single call between 20-30 minutes makes no sense; 2) I've never been to any high end restaurant (or Michelin starred establishment, for that matter) that doesn't call before giving a table away; and 3) their reservation site or email doesn't say anything about grace periods (or anything helpful at all, really), which is sorta stressful.

Anyways.. We made it there. Waited for a little while and got seated, so we let it go. My partner has been trying to take me to Sorrel since the before the pandemic. We've made multiple reservations but something had always come up that made us/them cancel so I've been eager to eat here for a while. We finally made it last night for an early valentines dinner and I couldn't be happier with the dining experience.

We started off with the maitake potato dashi which was really good. It was so flavorful and umami, I could have eaten a whole bowl of that and been happy with my evening.

Next up was the buñuelo, which was just alright. This was probably my least favorite item on the menu. I just didn't like the taste of the sweet and savory combination so I could have gone without this dish. Very pretty tho!

We then received sourdough focaccia with different kinds of butter -- the bread wasn't on the menu but man was it a pleasant surprise. The honey butter was the best butter I've ever tasted in my life. I wanted to take a whole batch of that home with me. Again, if this was the only item on the menu, I'd be ecstatic.

Next up: tortellini. Mine was vegetarian while my partner got the regular dungeness crab. I got mine with fresh black truffle and it was so so good! It brought a delicious, earthy flavor to an already very flavorful pasta dish but none of the flavors clashed and it delicious. What's interesting is that my first bite wasn't that good, but with each bite of the dish, it got better and better. What's great is that it was also very filling considering the other items were on the smaller side.

Next we received our entrees; my partner got the branzino and I got the vegetarian option which was celeriac. I didn't know what to think of this because I had never tried celeriac before, but the chef brought it out to show me what they'd be cooking it in and it looked like an actual dinosaur egg. It was really good - granted I have nothing to compare it to but it was a good dish. Rather small compared to my partners fish, but I also don't know how much of it I'd have been able to eat if it was any larger.

We then got a palette cleanser that they called a "pre-dessert." I have absolutely no clue what was in it, but I can still taste it and it tasted phenomenal. It tasted like salted caramel gelato on crushed cookies of some kind? I don't know but I'd eat 10 of them if I had the option.

Last up was the actual dessert and it was truly out of this world. I've never had anything like it. The flavors melted together so well - it was so delicate and creamy, not too sweet but sweet enough to know you're eating a dessert. I truly wish we could have ordered some of it to go, that's how good it was.

Afterwards, they brought us some little sweets to end the evening. I think one of them was a dark chocolate and the other was some kind of gummy? I'm forgetting because at this point I was in a food coma, but needless to say, this meal went above and beyond.

The verdict is in: Sorrel is worth the hype. We will be back!

Mildly impressive, nothing crazy, nothing super noteworthy either aside from their dry-aged duck which was honestly very good.

Good service, no surprises, not too much else to say about this, which is a good thing.

Pleasantly spacious dining room, good chair to table height ratio, and low noise level, and honestly pretty good for dates imo.

      1* Michelin
      $98 / 4 course menu
      $38 / pp caviar x 2

What a delightful meal at Sorrel! I wasn't sure about going all out for the tasting menu and due to time, we booked the 4-course menu. However, you could change to a full tasting menu on the spot should you change your mind at the restaurant. The restaurant is super flexible and accommodating when I inquired about the mushroom toast course from the tasting menu if it can be added to the 4 course menu and it is possible for $18/pp add on.

After perusing over the add ons, we decided to enjoy the mushroom toast next time we return for their full tasting menu. For our first time, we added the only two add ons on the menu, the caviar course and half duck.

      1) Snacks
      a) Sweet corn sopapilla, honey, poppy: a fried dough ball drizzled with honey on top
      b) scallop - ogo, hot pepper, tomato and peach
      c) summer squash flan - black truffle dashi: sweet and umami yummy!

      2) Kaluga Caviar (add on) $38/pp - served with kouign amman, smoked stone fruit, and mt tam cheese: fantastic dish, the stone fruit has a hint of smokiness and just like that, completely elevated the slices of the stone fruit. Caviar was served on top of the mt tam cheese. Like cream cheese, spreadable over the kouign amman.

      3) Big eye tuna, matsutake, sicilian pistachio, tomato jelly - cross between crudo/ceviche. Love the clean taste of the dish and the earthiness of the matsutake mushroom slices.

      4) Focaccia sour dough with three types of condiments (cultured butter, lardo, anchovy oil black garlic base) so thoughtful. Save some bread for the next course!

      5) Marubini (pasta) stuffed with lamb shoulder, legumes, fonduta - used the sour dough bread to get all the fonduta sauce from the pasta dish. The marubini were so pretty!

      6) Choice of Halibut, eggplant, tamari, chicken tea or Wagyu Beef (supplement $46) - we decided on the halibut since we added the duck. The halibut was cooked tender in the center. Loved the chicken tea, all the essence of the chicken but not yet like a consommé.

      7) Dry Aged Duck (half, add on $65) caramelized honey, fennel, sage - crispy skin, thin layer of fat, perfect medium rare, tender meat. Definitely get this add on!

      8) Intermezzo - lime granita, sorrel - learned something last night, sorrel is a green plant that gives a tangy sour taste. I have to taste it to believe it so I picked out the baby leaf and tried and indeed, it tasted sour, so fascinating! This is where the restaurant's name come from and the leafy logo on the menu.

      9) Dessert - Charentais melon, mochi, pretzel, coconut: super light and refreshing dessert. So glad it wasn't a chocolate dessert. The melon sorbet(?) had a very subtle sweetness you can barely taste it which I liked.

      10) sweets - chocolate bon bon and jelly candy

Parking: street parking, it wasn't too bad on this particular Sat we went. In fact last night the street was unusually quiet after our meal.

      Service: adequate

Definitely will want to make it back for their full tasting menu. Chef Alex Hong was in the kitchen working hard. Such young chef with so much talent!

Picture this: You're walking into a restaurant in the heart of San Francisco, greeted by crisp white linens, gleaming silverware, and perfectly arranged flowers.

As you settle into your table, you notice that you're sitting next to a group of overly enthusiastic tech entrepreneurs who are pitching a new app idea to an unimpressed venture capitalist. They're talking loudly and gesturing wildly, and you can't help but overhear every word. The VC keeps asking pointed questions, but the entrepreneurs keep cheerfully plowing ahead with their pitch. It's like a train wreck you can't look

In the midst of all the tech-bro drama, the food arrives and is a welcome distraction. It's beautiful and delicious, each dish more memorable than the last. The service is impeccable, and the wine list is extensive and impressive.

The place oozes class, sophistication, and charm - until you're hit with a sense of playful whimsy and tongue-in-cheek humor. This is Sorrel, a restaurant that takes itself seriously, but not too seriously.

Imagine the most perfect, golden-brown sourdough bread, baked to perfection and served with house-made cultured butter. As you tear off a piece, the crust crackles and gives way to a soft, airy interior. The butter melts into the bread, forming a rich, decadent pool of deliciousness.

Now, imagine a dish of pappardelle pasta, the noodles handmade and perfectly al dente. They're dressed in a silky, rich sauce made with sweet, caramelized onions and earthy black truffles. As you take a bite, the flavors explode on your tongue, rich and complex but perfectly balanced. And that's just the beginning!

All in all, Sorrel is a top-notch dining experience, despite the unintentionally entertaining atmosphere.

Food was delicious, and staff was very accommodating to dietary restrictions. However, I have to knock a star off for the entree. I ordered the fish dish, and it was very underwhelming and not the star of the show. My partner ordered the wagyu, and it was good but not great. The appetizers and snacks were much more exciting. Cannot emphasize enough how good the caviar cheesecake was!

I went to Sorrel yesterday for the second time, and it never disappoints! The atmosphere, the service, and above all, the food were just perfect. Not only is the food presented perfectly, but it also tastes even better. My favorite dishes were definitely the oysters and the passion fruit dessert, both fresh, light, tasty, and just amazing. One of my favorite restaurants: highly recommended!

Yes, this place is pretty damn good.

I went on a Wednesday evening, so it was pretty quiet. I would have expected to get good service as a result and it was, in fact, superb. Eli, the general manager, initially helped me navigate my options and was helpful and knowledgeable about the selections.

I went with the 4-course menu, since it was described to me as running about 90 mins, whereas the larger menu would have take 2+ hours - time that I didn't have to spare that night. Turns out that it was more of an 7 or 8-course menu in the end with the snacks and my add-ons. No complaints here.

I did choose the Wagyu main course, but also couldn't resist the duck supplement. I think most diners would choose the seafood (trout on that evening), followed by the beef. But Eli assured me that I was not a lunatic by ordering duck and beef. I was very hungry and he set high expectations for the duck.

In the end, the duck was probably the best duck breast I had ever eaten. I had always held the famous duck at Eleven Madison Park as the gold standard (prior to them going vegan!), but this surpassed it, IMO. It was incredible.

As noted, small additions can stretch the meal out. I went with a few oysters (high recommended). You'll also receive some "snacks", a "pre-dessert" and an amazing bread course that's a meal in itself. The beverage pairing was also wonderful and good value.

      Highly recommended.

Finally got a chance to dine here and was so excited to visit since my brother raves about this place. I flew in from LA to take my friend here for his Birthday and noted that when I made the reservations. Every course has its own unique taste and I opted in for the kaluga caviar course where we each get our own to enjoy ( I am greedy with my caviar). We also got the upgrade for the Wagyu course which was fantastic where there was 3 sets of presentation of Wagyu. I was pretty content with the food, service and ambiance but when it was near the final courses, I was a bit disappointed. My server didn't let me know he was leaving and will have another team member take over.. Every table near me who was celebrating a birthday or anniversary got a complimentary tiny cake except mine. Not sure why but I did see and hear them offer them a gift from their kitchen.... It was off putting coming from a Michelin star restaurant.

Parking is a bit hectic since there's no valet or parking lot near so do come a little early to score your street parking or Uber if you live near the city!
