- Julya C.San Diego, CA03527Apr 4, 2024Updated review
I'm actually really sad to be updating my review but considering how I was treated today, it feels necessary.
As Yelp can see in my original review, I've been coming to this location for a long time. I used to come almost daily when I lived in Linda Vista, but I moved, so now I come when I have time before work which is up the street.
I have 2 favorite drinks I've been consistently - A Kahuna Coconut or Iced Aloha White Mocha. These drinks have been made the same, consistently, for the last 8ish years, probably longer.
My problem is that when I came today and ordered a Kahuna Coconut, the girl made a coconut smoothie type drink. I very kindly said, "hey, I don't think this is right because it's a coffee drink", she proceeded to show me her tablet and say that it's not a coffee drink and that's how she learned to make it. She then asked me how to make it, I don't know, I just know it has the coconut coffee in it.
I explained on the customer facing menu it's literally a coffee drink, and then I came onto Yelp and showed her pictures of other peoples Kahuna Coconuts so that she knew I wasn't trying to be difficult, she clearly was taught wrong or just doesn't know.
After she remade the drink she had me taste it, It's definitely a coffee frappe but not a kahuna coconut. Whatever, no big deal fine.
My issue is that she involved other customers in line by having them vouch for how she remade it. Again, I said don't worry about it and she said "I made it how you said to"... I don't know how to make the drink, that's why I'm a customer.
It was really uncomfortable for me and she was really argumentative. I normally don't complain but I wanted a coffee frappe at least. As I walked away other customers said "sorry you have to deal with that" even though I was really kind. I even tipped her!
Definitely a bummer, I would've preferred to reach out to a manager or something directly but shaka is small so this will have to do.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Apr 21, 2018Previous reviewI've come here so many times without writing a review but since I'm moving I figured it was a good time. I love Shaka. I've been going here since it was just "Lion Coffee". In the beginning there were only two girls working there, I don't know her name but she has bright blonde hair, she's my favorite. She ALWAYS makes my coffees perfectly. I'm a little picky and she explained to me the easiest way to order how I prefer certain drinks but no one else does it the way she does.
The newer staff is great too, they are really kind and calm under pressure.
My only complaints come from things that aren't the businesses fault:
The parking lot is always full, unless you go first thing in the morning which leads me to the fact that peak times are before the high school opens which I believe is between 8am-9am Mon-Fri. Those times of days the high school students can become rowdy and disrespectful, which again, isn't the shacks fault but if you're like me, and prefer your coffee in peace, prepare to take it to go. - Apr 16, 2023
We lived in Kearny Mesa in so long and it's a shame we haven't given this place a try and I'm glad we did today.
Tiny coffee shop across from Kearny High. Love the variety of espresso, smoothies, teas, and a bit of breakfast.
I love anything that says "Aloha". For today's visit, we've tried Aloha White mocha. Man oh man, this is not the typical Starbucks drink. That's why you gotta try them and you'll know what I'm talking about. The drink consisted of espresso, ghiradeli white choc, banana and coconut shot. Can't hide the banana shot, not so much of the coconut. It was indeed on the sweeter side. I'll asked next time if they can adjust the sweetness (I hope!). Everything in this drink is good.
Highly recommend and will visit again to try different drinks. Parking can be challenging as they share with other businesses. They are not open all day.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 811686Sep 23, 2023
Place is good...I also had the acai bowl that had coconuts (not pictured). Will be coming back to this place when I around town again. It does have a very good vibe to it.

Coffee shack located in a small complex - easy ordering, not a long wait. It has a Hawaiian inspiration to their menu, but they don't Mac nut flavoring which I wish they had. Got the caramel macchiato and that was good, staff was friendly. There is parking but can be limited during peak meal times because of other food businesses.

Love this little coffee shack! I've been visiting this place every since it was called Lion's coffee and they still have my favorite drink, the Aloha Mocha. I take it with only 1 pump banana and it's excellent! Great flavor combination that sounds iffy but it's good! The staff is always so friendly and smiling plus they are never hesitant to answer questions or give recommendations.

This was a very quaint coffee shack with a wide array of Hawaii-inspired flavors. It was a cold day when I when on my lunch break and saw that there was a little coffee shop so I stopped by and was pleasantly surprised at the different coffee options- I'm so used to seeing all of the same classic menu items in other shops. I ended up getting their aloha white mocha, which had coconut infused coffee and a slight hint of banana. I was slightly skeptical because the taste of banana is so strong usually but it was not overpowering at all! The drink absolutely melted my cold and I walked away feeling happier than I was when I approached it:) Stop by if you need a quick drink

This place used to be good however last time I ordered an acai bowl it was frozen and super hard. I have to let it sit for awhile before i can eat it. I was expecting them to blend it as you order. Sorry do not waste your money. Either get it elsewhere or make your own!

I ordered the Duke Açaí bowl and a medium Kona 100% Ice Coffee. Very tasty bowl and the coffee was strong and robust. Just like I expected to be, delicious. I definitely enjoyed both. I would also recommend this place and would visit again. I'm visiting from Hawaii and always enjoy Lions coffee, especially 100% Kona. The service was good, there is outdoor seating and there's enough parking in the small lot too.

All the girls who work here are so sweet! They also are super fast in making drinks and make conversation to fill the time while we wait for our food/drinks to be ready. They always have a great attitude and make me look forward to coming back, not to mention everything tastes delicious!
