Is there MSG used in the food?
A:
Not sure if it was MSG, but there is definitely a sweet taste with their barbecue sticks. As per the noodles, I didn't notice a strong flavor profile and they even recommend adding spicy mustard to bump up the flavor.

Wonton min was delicous and soup was hot and tastyyyy! Bbq sticks were sooo good and don't forget to get it with extra sauce. May have a wait as this is a hole in the wall place, inside dining is a small booth style restaurant. Service was speedy. Our waitress was nice and very talkative with all the customers.
Must try saimin spot in HonoluluHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 1, 2024Updated review
I was so ono for Saimin and we were near to Kalihi.
You got it!!! Palace Saimin!!!
If you're a visitor of the islands, Saimin is an Asian local Hawaii food that started during the plantation days. Most of Hawaii local favorite foods are from the plantation days when the different nationalities got together for lunch and shared their food. That's where plate lunch was born.
Palace Saimin has takeout or dine in, a real "hole in da wall" kinda place. There's parking just enough for eating there and for a fast takeout to eat at home. Service is always fast and a lot of people wanna eat so no talk story for too long.
I know a lot of locals who haven't eaten here. What are you waiting for?
As for the visitors, enjoy one of Hawaii's favorite food and no forget order the Barbecue beef stick!!!
Enjoy my friends!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Mar 8, 2023Previous reviewI'm baaaaack!!!!
I'm old school and love these mom and pop hole in da wall eating places. Wooden tables and bench chairs.
For those who don't know, Saimin is a Hawaii thing. If you travel to Japan you will not find a Saimin stand only Ramen. It started from the old plantation day where the workers would share food. The noodles came from the Chinese and the dashi or broth from the Japanese.
Palace Saimin has been here for years and maybe the dashi changed a little but not noticeable. I still love the Saimin and BarBQ beef sticks! I would travel over the Ko'olau to pick up Saimin from here.
Did I mention that they do takeout too!!Aug 20, 2019Previous reviewThis is my best Saimin stand. Just a hole in the wall with wooden tables and chairs. The Saimin has the same taste as I remembered as a young boy and they still have old style BarBQ Beef sticks. The prices are still affordable. There is about seven parking space in the front.
One more thing... they only take cash - Mar 18, 2024
Watching a travel show, I remember a scene at this restaurant where the host dined with two local chefs. Not sure whether it's good that the episode is so vivid in my mind.
Driving here on a Tuesday morning and using the map app on my phone, I drove by twice before finding a space a half block east from here. I still couldn't find it and had to ask my local friend to stand in front as my landmark. We walked over before noticing the restaurant, recessed in back of a nondescript parking lot. I would later move my car here when a space opened here.
This was one of my most anticipated meals on this trip, having never dined in a devoted saimin place. Seated at the rear table on the left, I had a view of the kitchen, the expediting counter, and and old style wall menu across the room. After a brief discussion, we agreed to order the same items, all three of us. We had the combination saimin (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=MvUnkl9n5GvmvR36m7GIMA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), which only comes in one size, large. As I expected, it was a bowl of comfort with the clean and clear broth, the acclaimed local made Sun noodles, shredded pieces of BBQ pork, and a baby fistful of sliced green onions. The two surprises were the addition of udon noodles (likely Sun made again) and a small saucer of hot mustard. Udon and saimin egg noodles? Yes, please... the contrast made this bowl that much more interesting. Talk about taking it back old school. This brought back food memories from my childhood, in a good way. We also ordered two skewers each of beef sticks (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Ii4tfXNAlKKZYeYjlTADQQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q)., another one of their staples. It was flavorful with a sweet sauce or marinade. Extra sauce is offered on the menu, but we didn't find it necessary.
The dining room was about half full, all locals likely eating before going to work or construction workers having an early lunch. Our waitress was efficient and checked on our water cups periodically. As I went to use the restroom, I couldn't help but thank our chef/cook/owner for a wonderful meal. It was a pleasure meeting Ling (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=nU8ep7GjndDewYr1UTdXmg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q).and reading about the legacy that she continues here. I'm looking forward to repeating this on my next visit and future visits.Helpful 10Thanks 4Love this 10Oh no 0 - Jan 26, 2024Updated review

Number 1 saimin place! Check this long-time saimin restaurant!. (Tow side just past Farrington HS). Their soup is so deep and delicious! Love udon? You can have "said on" a combination of saimin and udon noodles. BBQ sticks just delicious grilled and yummy sauce!
Service is quick. Nice quaint shop!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 16, 2017Previous reviewJust like the good old days! Wonderful taste. I order a large won ton mein and couldn't finish it! So much won tons and noodles. BBQ stick -- chunky meat on a skewer and sauce to roll your meat in. Visit this saimin favorite!

This unassuming, family-run hole in the wall joint isn't flashy, if you are not paying attention you might drive right past it. But oh boy, does it serve up some great local comfort food that you definitely should try. The atmosphere here is like stepping into a time capsule, with old school benches in front of each side of the tables, walls adorned with menu boards and maneki nekos . Love the texture of the noodles and the subtle flavors of the warm broth. My only complaint is that they don't sell rice because that and just the broth would be perfect for when feeling under the weather.

Michael, we are so very sorry for less than acceptable service on your last visit. Thank you for your patronage and we hope that your next and all future visits will prove to meet or exceed your service expectations.
Respectfully,
ScottOct 22, 2014Previous reviewThe food was good, the service was lacking.
The food was good so I gave that two stars. The service on the other hand was lacking. The guy took our order and brought us our food when it was ready other than we didn't see him again the rest of the night or any other worker until we went up to pay our bill.Aug 25, 2011Previous reviewAwesome doesn't even come close to describing the saimin here.
Parking Wise: Very very small parking lot here. Was lucky to find parking. Only about 5 or so stalls.
Service Wise: Good, fast service. The guy we had was really nice. We had the food in less then 5 minutes.
Food Wise: I had the XL Wonton Min, the wife had a Small Saimin and we each had 2 barbeque sticks each. The noodles was great it had a nice chewy texture that was reminiscent of old fashioned local style saimin. The broth was nice and clean, with a simple taste, not over or under seasoned, but just right. The wonton were nice and soft, with a flavory meaty taste (not at all bland as some places). The wife wanted to try one and then she wanted to eat another, which was funny because she usually doesn't care for wonton. The barbeque sticks where nice and tender, with a great barbeque sauce that complimented the saimin.
Overall: The only thing I wished was that they would offer rice so that I could have placed it in the broth to finish it off with. But other then that I'm definitely a fan and can't wait to go back.

A hole in the wall for saimin! Where else can you get a meal for under $10.
A tiny tiny place but fulfilling for a bowl of saimin and a beef stick. Loved my wonton min. Simple and just the way I like it. I wolfed the beef stick before I took a photo.

Still da Best Hole in the Wall here on Oahu for Saimin noodles and BBQ Beef Sticks!
Love the hand made Wonton noodles stuffed with pork.
The broth is flavorful and such a great comfort food.
No need to even glance at the simple menu board when I walk in and choose any open seat.
I'm always greeted with that local Aloha with fast & friendly service that always includes a glass of ice water.
I absolutely love the Combo Noodle Bowl and at least 3 BBQ Beef Sticks to satisfy my hunger!
Five Fabulous Stars for local Aloha! Delicious Simplicity! Nice portions! Consistency and Price! Scanning my Yelp APP Favorites, I quickly zoned in on one of my favorite hole in the wall's for a bowl of combo noodles & BBQ Sticks!
"Palace Saimin" located across from Post Office on N King Street, was just what I was craving! Oh so ONO Yummy!
This very simple but consistent noodle delight, has remained one of my my hole in the walls here on Oahu.
Their broth base is flavorful, with just the right amount of thin sliced pork and green onions.
I always go for their triple delight combination noodles; saimin, udon and won ton udon that only comes in the Large portioned bowl. (Oh how I wish I could get this in the XL!)

Love this place!Jul 25, 2017Previous reviewBest lightly flavored broth with Ramon noodles and tasty grilled meat skewers for the price!
No wonder they have been in business for 70 YEARS! Yes it is difficult to park, but worth the wait!
My first visit to this quaint little hole in the wall nestled at the bottom of a small apartment/business complex and next door to The Platinum Lodge & a pawn shop.
It's directly across from the Post Office off King Street.
It seems a little shady from the outside, but the small picnic-style tables with benches and simple menu posted on the wall inside, make a perfect setting for slurping down Saimin noodles and grinding on a juicy pair of BBQ Meat sticks!
They have a very simple but delicious menu with 3 different sizes of piping hot bowls;
Small, Large and Extra Large.
The combination bowl is my favorite! It contains all the noodles Saimin, Udon and won ton. Chopped green onion sprinkle, Char siu pork only with that awesome savory soup broth!
Unfortunately it only comes in Large!
However Large, turned out to be just right!
I started with 2 meat sticks on the side, but added another before I was done!
I really Love these noodles and can't wait to come back for more!

Good ole neighborhood Saimin Palace. It's nice to have comfort cooking here. Nothing fancy just affordable simple satisfy your belly food.
We have to keep mom and pops going so we can continue to have this diamond in the rough.
The parking lot is a about 5 spaces, but there is plenty of parking on the road. You'll see a lot of regulars that have been coming here forever. It's kind of like Zippys, without chili.
Will be back again for another bowl :).Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1
