While the historic centre overflows with pizza joints, the Spanish Quarter is the place to find traditional Neapolitan cuisine in unspoilt family run trattorias. Osteria della Mattonella, run by the La Marangio family, specialises in all the home cooked classics, but the restaurant itself is the real draw, decorated as it is in blue and green majolica tiles that have graced the walls since the 1700s.

The pasta is made super traditional and taste a bit under al dente so be prepared. Just order anything that includes their homemade ragu.

Great selection of wine and you'll love their Red. Cheers

When we asked a tour guide/friend in Naples where to eat this was the place she told us to go. We called the same day and were able to get a reservation for that night and we are glad we did because the food is wonderful! The food here was so authentic and flavorful. We have visited Italy many times and this is one of the best meals we have had. Even though our Italian is very limited and it appeared the staff had fairly limited English, we were able to order with ease. If you are in Naples you cannot pass this place up.

After walking around Napoli for 2 hours we were hungry and after skimming through some restaurants on Yelp we thought this one looked pretty good. However be aware of reservations during peak hours. Luckily with my boyfriend's Italian they were kind enough to let us in after 10 minutes wait. I don't believe I saw any tourists and if they were Italian so if you go be prepared to have Google Translate on you when speaking to the servers. We ordered beans in pasta and beans, ragu and courgette (neapoletain style) which I believe are some traditional dishes in Napoli. The service was wonderful and if we could we come back again.
