Super odd experience last night. While waiting for a friend I grabbed a drink and some food. The service was good, the salmon was also done very well.
The odd part that I don't get is when I finished and he handed me my bill, he told me he already added the 20% gratuity to the bill. Never ever have I had this happen before especially for 1 person and not be told in advance that they do that also let me just say this was not something that I could remove, it was itemized on the bill. Felt very wrong and s as it should have been on the menu and if it is, should have been pointed out to me. I would have done that myself just the idea of it makes me disappointed it can be allowed. I always do more than that and still left an additional $10. He was good, the idea this is allowed is completely off and inappropriate to do.Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 2, 2023
The usual expensive steakhouse....except I ordered scallop. It was good! Ambience was nice. Food was good. Parking was easy.
I would come back for the ambience and sit outside on a nice California evening.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 15, 2024Updated review
Menlo Tavern is a truly hidden gem. I love the ambiance. In summer, they close the indoor seating for dinner and have it in a beautiful courtyard instead. There are plenty of heaters and some group seatings with fire pits.
I visited the place on Monday and sat at the indoor lounge. I had the fried duck confit which didn't take too long to come out. The food portion was quite generous, and it's delicious. I will certainly be back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 25, 2024Previous reviewI ordered a Shrimp Fettuccine and it was tasty and good portion. It's just a little longer for the food to come out of the kitchen. The place is not big, so it's probably a good idea to make reservations to ensure you have a table. There are plenty free of self-parking.

Amazing meal farm to table in the middle of Palo Alto. The staff was incredibly friendly and I ate my meal outside listening to live music. I will say it was the best outdoor dining space that I have experienced in Palo Alto. I recommend the burrata and lamg, I also tried 2 different salads because I couldnt make my mind up and they were both great.

What a beautiful place! The aesthetic is 5-star worthy and I appreciate the care that goes into the overall ambiance. The wine and appetizers were lovely and there were plenty of gluten-free options to choose from. The entrees were good but I do have one piece of feedback. Both the burger patty and salmon were extremely seasoned. The fried artichoke hearts as well. Perhaps this was a one-off and we just got unlucky but I would encourage the kitchen to dial it back a bit, especially on the burger and artichoke hearts. My boyfriend, who is so polite he will eat just about anything in front of him, didn't finish his burger because of how salty it was. Not a deal-breaker as our entire experience overall was VERY satisfying.
And lastly, I'd definitely come back to see Chip Gale play more live music, too. That was a TREAT!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - rugbarn d.Alameda, CA2285133Aug 19, 2023
Beautiful place, ambiance unforgettable, met up here for my mother-in-laws 86th birthday. We sat outside on a warm sunny Saturday around noon.
Two ppl ordered the turkey club, two ordered the Tavern Burger, one ordered the huckleberry pancakes, and per suggestion of the waiter (who was super helpful), I ordered the special, farro (salad) w/ corned beef and poached eggs and a side of cottage potatoes (which were essentially the most amazing looking and hash brown rectangular blocks of deliciousness (see photo).
The food was all very well presented and yummy.
Definite 5 stars for excellent service. We had special requests--music too loud, can you move the umbrella, my MIL is allergic to garlic, can poached eggs be over medium, etc... all of which the waiter (wish i got his name) was super attentive to and helpful with.
The meal concluded w/ a decadent slice of complimentary cheesecake for the birthday lady and scoops of Marianne's ice cream (chocolate, vanilla) and mango sorbet for the rest of us.
We took photos by the sitting area and fire pit and now trying to think of a reason to stay at the hotel there tooHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 28, 2023
The food doesn't taste as good as it looks, but it's not bad either. I don't have much to say except for "fine, but forgettable."

On vacation with family, everyone said try this restaurant sad to say it was a big mistake. Butternut soup was watery like someone put water in it place it in the microwave oven. order lamb it was the worst burnt over cooked. If this is the best I don't want to see the worst of Palo Alto restaurants. Stayed 10 days and did not eat out again. Ordered pizza. Yes this was my third restaurant in area.
