After we left her grave site, Tony and I stopped at her home located just a few blocks from her daughter's home, Kenmore Plantation
The house was closed to tours. It was so cold out only 25 degrees plus with wind blowing, it was so unbearable. The house was larger than I expected. I am definitely going to wait a few months and go back to check out the interior
Located in the historic section of town and easily accessible via car or walking tourHelpful 6Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - 42210942250Jul 7, 2021
A quick tour but an interesting one. We were early for a tour, so we walked around the garden which was pretty and then sat on the porch until it was time. The tour has a few different tour guides rotating around, but they deliver an efficient speech and highlight specific items in the house.
Overall it was a good overview of Mary's life and her final days and her last visit with her son. There are a few objects that are original, so overall it was an interesting and informative tour. The gift shot is also pretty big and has some good souvenir choices and some snacks.
It's a block away from her daughter's house, so it's also interesting to compare. It's a little less ornate but interesting in its own way.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Aug 27, 2019
The Mary Washington House was part of our 3 part ticket, which we purchased to tour this, the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop and the Rising Sun Tavern for $15 a person. My mother, aunt and grandmother were in town from Ohio and Pennsylvania and wanted to stay local to see some of the highlights of Fredericksburg. In my humble opinion, this one was the most interesting of the three tours.
We decided to tour the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop and the Rising Sun Tavern first, then grab lunch and come back around to get the Mary Washington House tour in. All tours last roughly 30-45 minutes. Unfortunately, when we pulled up to the Mary Washington House, there was a bus full of senior citizens also touring. They were pretty pokey walking through the rooms and about half requested a chair to sit in upon entry into every room, which the tour guide happily retrieved, but put us behind.
Photography is not permitted in the Mary Washington House, nor video. The house is also not handicap accessible, when going upstairs. There is a cute gift shop, with great prices, on site and beautiful gardens were in full bloom in the rear of the house.
Our tour guide was informative and friendly. Definitely well worth the cost!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sep 22, 2019
This is a pretty interesting museum off the beaten path of the "regular" stuff in Fredericksburg. The house is very small, so it might be best to combine a visit with the other options in those package tickets one can buy. One of the nice things about this place are the extremely knowledgable tour guides, who have a seemingly endless knowledge of the minutiae of the Washingtons' life. Worth a visit if you have the time!

A network between museums in Fredericksburg is pathetic and non existent. This particular museum is two rooms and is absolutely not worth the $6 per person that they charge to look at a small collection of antiques. Sure, it's cool stuff, but two hours of net wage from the average earner is highway robbery. The best thing for all of the Fredericksburg museums to do would be to join together and provide a punch card, made available at the visitors center for a reasonable one-time fee. The museums also seriously need to get with the 21st century and realize that banning average people from snapping a pic or two on the way through gives the museum an air of overrated self-importance and in the long run hurts only the museum. Is it nice to see a place where Washington and relatives influenced the very foundations of our country? Yes. But the extravagant price point is classist and prevents any family who does not have quite a bit of disposable income from actually being able to experience history firsthand. Realize that it would cost a family of four $24 to view this museum alone, and a budgeting family can easily eat dinner for that price and will likely choose to do so over a 15 minute tour of old chairs and tables, especially when they don't even get to take a photo of the family doing it together.

Dear Amber,
I'm sorry your experience was less than you expected. I am happy to report that there are multi-site passes as your review suggested. Washington Heritage Museums offers the Heritage Pass, granting one time admission to all three of our museums for a month. The pass is currently (2019) priced at $15 for adults, and $7 for students. I apologize if you were not offered this when you toured. Additionally, the City of Fredericksburg offers a Day Pass and a Timeless Pass. More information on these and other discounts such as the Winter Package can be found at this link: https://www.visitfred.com/2012/02/07/your-ticket-to-history/ All these options are great for families touring with children.
I'm also happy to note that we offer a free Holiday Open House, typically on the first Sunday in December, and that admission is half price on President's Day. Student admissions are discounted every day.

The Mary Washington House was pretty interesting. The man giving half the tour was very knowledgable and welcoming. Would have liked some literature about the gardens or more signage but a must stop when visiting Fredericksburg!!

Beautiful home of George's mother. Not many original pieces, but amazing that the women of VA saved this landmark
