Visited Mackworth Island State Park during my vacation with the plan to hike the loop trail that skirts the perimeter of the island.
I crossed the causeway to get to the island, parked, and got out - and encountered very high, very cold winds. I bundled up in my fleece and started out - but it was too windy and cold - to hike without warmer gear.
Pretty area!

Scenic, quick, easy, 1.5 mile loop that goes around the perimeter of small island of coast of Maine, only 15(ish) minutes from Portland. This level hike is a fun one for young adventurers that love to hunt for faerie homes. Plan ahead and stop at the first beaches to collect shells and such to build your own faerie home. Overall- I would've made this a frequent or annual event when my girls were younger if I had discovered it then!
Good hike for seniors, not challenging, flat, even footing throughout trail. Pets allowed on leash. No cyclists.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 255387164Oct 20, 2021
If you want to take a stroll along the water or go for a run, this is the park to go to. Parking is limited and this is a popular place to be so go early, especially on weekends.
Pro tip - Remember to bring cash as there is an entrance fee.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Laura R.Portland, ME1821332525Sep 18, 2020First to Review
This is just SUCH a beautiful space!! It's got a gatehouse and they now charge a $3 entry fee, from approx 8:00am to 4:00pm.
My two dogs just LOVE coming here and it's so close to home!
Today is the first time we've done the trail around the island in about a year! The tide was extremely high, so there was no beach on any side of the island. Generally there's lots of beach! There was a *tiny* strip of beach (mostly dune grass) on the northwest side.
Bring a picnic or book and enjoy some quiet time. Or bring a friend and enjoy visiting!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
