L&B Spumoni Gardens: A Brooklyn Legacy Serving Pizza and Spumoni Since 1918
L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn is a sacred destination for any pizza lover. It's not just a pizzeria; it's a slice of history that began in 1918 when the founder started selling pizza from a horse-drawn wagon--the "food truck" of its day. By 1939, he set down roots by purchasing property in Brooklyn to establish a spumoni factory. For those unfamiliar, spumoni is an Italian dessert made by mixing layers of chocolate, vanilla, and pistachio ice cream--a trifecta of flavors that became a neighborhood sensation.
As his popularity for pizza and spumoni soared, he added an outdoor seating area and a community gathering spot was born. The evolution continued, and by 1950, he built the pizza shop, serving the now-famous Sicilian pizza, a marvel of culinary craft: the mother dough (masa madre), a spongy, thick dough with a chewy, cloud-like texture achieved by layering mozzarella directly on the dough, then topping it with a rich tomato sauce and a dusting of Parmesan after it comes out of the oven. Seeing these hot, sizzling pies being knife-cut into squares as you approach the front of the line adds to the excitement of the deliciousness you're about to experience. While all the slices have a beautiful blend of crispy and chewy textures, I always ask for those extra crispy corner slices.
L&B remains family-owned, with staff that greets everyone with a smile and ensures your experience is as memorable as the food. Over a lifetime of visits, I've never had a bad experience--a testament to their consistency and care.
Today, the line at L&B is a testament to its enduring appeal, reminiscent of the days when eager locals lined up at the original wagon. It's one of the few lines I'll gladly join, with the promise of pizza that is among the best in the world. The ice cream window, where spumoni is king, offers an assortment of amazing handmade ice cream and Italian ice; my favorite ice flavors are cherry and rainbow.
They also have a full sit-down restaurant offering a full menu of traditional Italian fare. With parking available next door (though it fills up quickly), plenty of street parking, and ample outdoor seating, dining at L&B is an essential Brooklyn experience. Under the open skies of the City of Churches, L&B Spumoni Gardens stands as a cathedral of culinary history, continuing to serve up slices of joy to everyone who steps through its doors.Helpful 4Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - May 4, 2024
After a nice visit to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, my girlfriend and I were craving some pizza. L & B Spumoni Gardens seemed like the perfect spot to try a different style of pizza. We managed to find parking easily despite the seemingly packed lot. As we joined the line outside, we were unaware of the indoor seating until I went to check, which turned out to be a huge plus.
Once seated, we ordered the Sicilian Square Pizza with mushrooms on top. The pizza exceeded our expectations, with the perfect balance of thickness and crispiness that we both enjoyed. However, my girlfriend noted that she would prefer the mushrooms cooked a bit more. Despite this minor critique, we both agreed that L & B Spumoni Gardens offers exceptional pizza, and we would gladly return for another meal.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dottie Z.N HOLLYWOOD, CA27122May 3, 2024
Ive heard so many people say this is the best pizza period. Well I had to give it a try.
The line I guess to the left is to order pizza only. It didn't seem so long and I think most were just getting pies.
When I got up to the window I asked for 3 squares middles please. The guy looks down at the last 3 pieces he had in front of him which were 2 corners and a side which look like they have been there for a while. He shrugs his shoulders and said that all I got. I didn't want to hold up the line so I took the 3 pieces gave him the $12.
I have to say it was the worst pizza ive ever had. the crust was burnt and dry, the slices were cold. I had better pizza from a supermarket frozen boxed and thrown in the microwave.
Won't go there again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - 289349869Feb 25, 20241 check-in
I feel like you have to go to L&B at least once, for nostalgic purposes. Would recommend coming in the summer, sitting outside, and getting some icees.
I'm not gonna say this is one of the best pizza spots in NYC because I don't think it is (sorry!!!). But it's still a really good pizza, the sauce is delicious, and the dough very soft. Definitely worth this trip if you're already in that part of BK.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Mar 2, 2024
L&B will always be a special place for me. It's a hike to get out to, nuts it's absolutely worth it. You can order at the window or go inside the pizzeria and sit down. There's cafeteria styles seating outside, which is great during the summer. You'll go to a separate window if you want spumoni. In all my years of going here I haven't ate at the sit down side of the restaurant, but I've heard it's very good Italian food and you can also order a fresh pie to your table.
My tip is to get there early around opening time. Grab a few slices to sit down and eat, a couple for the car on the ride home (trust me, you will be craving the next slice after you finished what's on your plate), and make sure to grab a pie or two for later that day. I usually freeze some too. They reheat very well at 400 degrees for 5-7 min.
Don't forget to grab a spumoni too. Is it the best? You decide, but it makes for a full experience. I'll tell you this though, you cannot talk about great NY pizza without having L&B in the convo. In my opinion, it's in the Top 5.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 13, 2024
L&B Spumoni Gardens is more than just one of the best pizzzas in NYC...more than just some of the best ice cream around....it just happens to be one of the best Italian restaurants you can find. The staff is outstanding. Their food you cant enough of. Each dish is made to order with the freshest ingredients and plated perfectly. My favorite is the chicken picatta It has become my favorite place to get my favorite dish. Their chicken tenders was so surprisingly good, tender and juicy. So many dishes to choose from on the menu.
All home made and cook perfectly. L&B is one of the best restaurant in Brooklyn!!Helpful 6Thanks 1Love this 6Oh no 0 - Steve P.Jacksonville, FL01110Apr 13, 2024
Everything I ate at Spumoni Gardens was top notch. The rice balls, the Sicilian pizza, the carbonara, the penne vodka, the calamari were all well prepared. My son has a dairy allergy so he can't eat most of what's on the menu here, but he was able to eat the burger and fries and loved it. Our servers were on point too, filling my glass of water when it got to half glass and had another Stella beer ready. The restaurant itself has been around for years and the ambiance was great, even at 10pm coming straight from JFK with all our luggage.
I'll definitely come back to Spumoni Gardens!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 13, 2023
We got to check this place out while on the Slice of Brooklyn tour. The Sicilian was great-loved the sauce-and the service was top notch.
I imagine the takeout window has a long line during the warmer times of the year to sit outside and enjoy a slice or the homemade Spumoni. There is a nice inside dining area as well and a varied menu. Great local place. Check it out!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
