Do they serve imitation crab? Or real crab meat?
A:
default is imitation, but you can upgrade to real crab meat for like 3 dollars 50! It's worth it, imo.

I love this place. Very small, hole in the wall kind of restaurant. But the flavors they pack in the bite is just wow!!
I am vegetarian, so getting multiple vegetarian and tasty Sushi/roll options is like a dream come true... (No really, it's not an exaggeration)
Service is pretty quick and to the point. I just wish they were open for more hours though.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Rikki Erielle N.Newark, CA2080386May 9, 2024
I went with my coworkers during lunch, and it was fantastic!
The place was a bit small, however, the food quality was amazing! They were quick as well, and had great service.
I like the variety of options they have even including the vegetarian rolls.
Would definitely be back next time to satisfy my sushi cravings!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 34063129May 2, 20242 check-ins
My first time trying Kakuna was in Milpitas and I was so happy to find out they had one in Fremont! I always rave about this place to my friends and I was able to take my coworkers here since it is only 15 minutes from work.
They had the same delicious and unique rolls as Milpitas so I ordered all my favorites. The quality was still there and the service was great! My favorite part of Kakuna is how big and thick the rolls are.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 29, 20241 check-in
I was craving sushi so I went here over the weekend. I went here with a friend on a Saturday around 1:50pm and there was no wait since it was empty at that time!
While looking through the menu, I noticed they have such a large selection of sushi and ramen here! We ordered the Lobster Monster, Golden Cali, Lion King, and the Volcano sushi rolls.
Later, the food came and I totally wasn't expecting these pieces to be so big, but I'm glad it was! All of the rolls were good, but my favorite was the Golden Cali because I liked the crispy texture it has. If I were to rank my favorite from best to least favorite, it would be the Golden Cali, then the Lion King, then Lobster Monster, and last the Volcano sushi roll.
I'd recommend this place! The sushi pieces are huge and the price for each roll isn't that bad either. Next time, I think I want to try either their bento boxes or ramen.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 28, 20241 check-in
Kakuna is THE spot to satisfy all your sushi cravings. I remember trying this place a few years ago and the sake don had big cuts of salmon sashimi and a pile of delicious sushi rice, so I decided to order this again! And safe to say, expectations were met. The salmon is incredibly fresh, buttery, and all around perfect.
They also had toro written of their specials menu board so I know I had to order it. The 2-piece nigiri was INSATIABLE. Easily one of the best things I ate this year so far!!! It didn't specify if it was a fatty tuna, but if I had to guess by the color and the taste, I want to say it was chu toro. There was additional pieces of tuna on top of the base sashimi, and a brush of amazing umami oil over the top. If I wanted to recklessly spend money, I would order 10 more of these.
If your go-to order is specialty rolls, their menu is huge and has something for any taste. The rolls themselves are also gigantic in size. I ordered their popular kakuna roll to take back home and it was just as incredible in taste and quality as the rolls I had in the restaurant.
The restaurant is in a quiet plaza off Auto Mall, it's fairly small with a few tables so it does fill up quickly. After getting your table, you order at the counter, pay, then food will come out to your table. They are super popular for take out orders as well.Helpful 3Thanks 2Love this 3Oh no 0 - Mar 21, 2024
Mmm! Delicious and affordable!
I stopped by Kakuna last week for lunch with a coworker and I became a fan ever since!
We have shared the following.
+ Mixed tempura
+ Salmon nigiri combo
+ Kakuna Roll
+ Black Mamba
To sum it up, the restaurant is small, service was fast, food was fresh, tasty and big portions. I appreciate that they used different types of sauces so the two rolls we tried didn't taste the same. The tempura is light and crispy. And the nigiri were big thick pieces. I will be adding this place on my sushi rotation.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1 - Mar 22, 20242 check-ins
One of my favorite places to get sushi rolls in the bay area.
I just visited again recently for a dinner date with a friend and we both really enjoyed the meal.
I've gotten the nutcracker roll more than once and would order it again. It's unique that it has pesto cream on it but it goes really well with all the other ingredients.
There's a good size parking lot but no bathroom so plan ahead.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 1388179Mar 17, 2024
My wife and I were craving sushi while in the Fremont area. We found Kakuna based on the reviews. The restaurant is setup for mostly takeout but did have a few tables as well. Dining in is an afterthought though. You are provided a menu, then you must go up to the counter to order the food you want. Then it's self service tea and water.
Oishi roll 4/5: This comes with a lot of raw red onions with a spicy sauce on top. I love that and enjoyed it. The only downsides is the rolls were cut too big, making it hard to take a single bite per piece.
Gaijin Roll 4/5: This was very tasty combination fish was fresh with the right amount of sauce, not over powering.
Super Cali Roll 4/5: Normally we would not order this but it was actually really good as well. It starts with a base California roll but has unagi and miso sauce on top. This was surprisingly good.
Salmon Nigiri 4/5: very fresh, good quality
Toro Nigiri 4/5: very fresh, good quality
Albacore Nigiri 4/5: very fresh, good quality
Overall great sushi, better than expected. The dining room looked very drab and had my doubts. I would do takeout next time as that is what this restaurant seems to cater to.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 3, 2024
BEST SUSHI IN THE BAY!! Why is it the best you may ask? Well, the quality is insane and it tastes delicious but the price is what makes it stand out. If you asked me to guess how much the sushi costs I would have guessed the usual $15-$20 but NO! Almost all of the rolls are under $14. I have never seen these prices in the Bay Area for this kind of quality. Seriously, the sauces aren't too much or too little, you can tell the fish is fresh and the sushi is well made. I ordered the lion king roll which was $13 and it was one of my favorite lion king rolls I've ever had while also being one of the cheapest rolls I've ever had. Also, look at the size of these rolls? Check out this hidden gem!

A whole in the wall! It's hidden in the corner of a plaza! We were greeted right away. The restaurant is so cute, small setting with a sushi bar. It took a bit for them to come take our order but it was ok, we got edamame and grape tomatoes for starters (free) which both were delicious! My bf got the mi-so hot ramen which was so good! The broth was creamy but not over powering. There was a good amount of meat. He also got the California roll and let me tell you, best California roll I had! It was sweet but not hella sweet. A lot of imitation crab but you couldn't even tell it was imitation. It was delicious. He also got the sake nigiri which he was a little disappointed because he didn't want it seared and it came seared. He still ate it any way. I got the kansai don box which comes with snow crab meat, fish ball, scallop, uni and toro. IT WAS DELICIOUS. If you've ever been to rantei, it is similar to that. Every bite was so good! So fresh. They gave a LOT of rice which I did not even need, but it makes the box presentable. The toro was my favorite, it was buttery but not overpowering. I really enjoyed it. For $50 too!! I would def come back, possibly try some nigiri and oyster shooters.
