Over the years, I have trusted only a handful of people to style my hair. It is rather full and has a mind of its own. What a pleasant discovery to find Thom! As a master stylist, he knows exactly how to trim my hair so that it looks good when I leave the shop, as well as weeks later. He's also quite an interesting man and is a great conversationalist, plus stepping into his shop is like stepping back into 1970s London. What a fantastic experience. Who would have thought getting a haircut could be such an event!

This is a long needed revision to a formerly bad review after much thought. This salon is perfect for really curly hair with a finer or softer texture, but perhaps not the style of cutting that works best for curly hair with looser curls that tend to fall out in low humidity or straighten easily. Also, the style of cutting is more based on overall shape and look, so if you have any issues with your shoulders not being level or your head naturally tilting a bit to one side you may get an uneven looking cut.
The couple who own the salon are fantastically eclectic and kind and I had a wonderful experience overall but was unhappy with my haircut because I picked a salon that is specialized to a different type of curly hair.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nancy L.Washington, DC3912333Aug 20, 2021
A very much needed therapy session. Only come here if you have time, and are willing to learn valuable lessons about life.

I have been getting my hair cut by Tom since I was a young girl. Now that I am older I still go to Tom to get my hair cut. When I was home from college for the summer, Tom highlighted and cut my hair. It was so natural looking and I absolutely loved it; I attached some pictures!
I have been going to Tom and Isabelle for years because they have always provided me with the best service, haircuts, trims, and color than any other salon. I would recommend them to anyone.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Deb F.Carrboro, NC70193Sep 29, 2016
I found Thom and Isabelle online and after reading the reviews on Yelp I took a chance on them and SO GLAD I did!!! Thom clearly knows his craft and Isabelle (along with Angus and Stewart) made me feel so welcomed and comfortable. Highly recommend this eclectic and chic salon for any gal/guy who wants an experience that goes beyond a simple cut:color. Will def be back (and I may bring one of my cockapoos by for a visit as well ;)
Thank you both!!!

Best hair cut of my life bar none. I wandered in to inquire about a cut after seeing the 'curly hair specialist' sign out front. It was a whim; if I had checked Yelp instead of trusting my gut, I would have missed out on an amazing find!
I have gray hair; it's fine and naturally curly. Thom took off about 4 inches of COVID growth and gave me a great head and neck massage. The true test of a cut is how the hair performs for mere mortals. I've had no problem recreating my curls and have gone back to wearing my hair down instead of pulled up all the time.
I have lived in DC, LA and NY - never had a better cut. If you have curly hair, give this place a shot - you won't be disappointed.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Becky S.Annapolis, MD03Sep 30, 2015
Thom is an excellent hair colorist and stylist! He takes his time, listens carefully to your desires, is gentle with a kind explanation if he feels like a better color or style would look best. I received 3 hours of individual attention to trim and color my hair. He kept the salon open late to ensure I got his professional best! His wife and business partner is lovely, kind, & also very attentive to your wishes.
I have Very Curly hair that had led to numerous hair disasters with hair dressers who "promised " they understood very fine hair that is also curly. Thom truly knows hair!
The price is high & I saved for 6 mos but it was well worth it!!

Ok, so here's how unprofessional these people are.... Months after posting about my nightmare experience at this salon (see previous review), I received a personal reply via Yelp from Isabelle, the owner. Apparently, she did not like my review! She denied everything that happened, called me a liar and piled on more hateful insults in a shockingly vicious and spiteful semi-literate tirade. Remember when Trump mocked the reporter who had a disability? Well, Isabelle seems to have a mean streak of that caliber.
Here's a sample of what she wrote to me: "And as far as color you my dear are color blind . I do not have cranberry hair however it is not ash/blond/gray and raggedy brown on the ends With no shape, like yours , what a nightmare, no wonder you do not like yourself." Classy, no?
You would think any entrepreneur with a single dram of business acumen would think twice before actually personally attacking a customer. They would just let it go or apologize, however half-heartedly. But not her. She has upped the ante now and brought upon her business yet more well-deserved criticism which will remain here on Yelp for eternity to warn off people that might otherwise have become paying customers. A classic example of being hoisted by one's own petard. I guess she must have cut that class on savvy business practices at the hairdresser academy to smoke cigarettes out back.
In her rant, she makes the ludicrous claim that they are "artists". Barbers and hairdressers are artists now, are they? Not to demean an honest profession, but that's just rubbish. I've never known anyone to include hairdressers among the likes of Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Prince, Mozart, Maria Callas, Billie Holiday or Baryshnikov. Yes, you might get a fine haircut from somebody, but that doesn't qualify them as an artist. The English language has been debased enough already without going down that road.
They have a very bizarre and narcissistic notion that they are some kind of hairdresser royalty and should anyone be dissatisfied with their work, then off with their heads! (Be careful, they do have razors in their shop.)
So I ask you, the paying public looking for a good haircut: Do you dare put yourself at the mercy of these two petty, incorrigibly rude individuals who lack the simple intelligence to protect their bottom line by treating all customers with respect and dignity? There are so many other choices - do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. You don't need the aggravation from this horrid harpy and her hapless husband.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 11, 2018Previous reviewHouse of Ebbitt? No, House of Horrors! All the folks here who rave about Tom and Isabelle being such wonderful people haven't ever crossed them. If you express unhappiness with their work, they will come down on you like a sledgehammer. Like a wrestling tag team, this elderly couple will gang up to belittle, insult and mock you, tell you you don't know what you're talking about (what ever happened to the customer always being right?), and brag about being so great they could not possibly be responsible for the horrible color they have just made your hair. Probably best not to let a woman whose own hair is cranberry red anywhere near your own. Thom, who likes to pretend he knows something about jazz so you will think he's hip and esoteric, will actually thrust a magazine photo in your face and demand, "Do you know who this is?" Well, of course you don't: it's some "genius" hairdresser he trained under in Scotland (you're supposed to be impressed - Woohoo!). The two of them apparently think quite highly of themselves as evidenced by their nearly life-size portrait, circa 1970, hanging in the shop. They'll screw up your color because they literally run out the door to chase after their dogs, leaving you alone with your head in the shampoo basin, hair wet, for 15 minutes...and then have the audacity to blame you for letting the dogs escape! If you ask for a partial refund for the sorry state of your hair, they'll snap back with, "Aha! So it's about the money!" Thom claimed to this customer that in all his years he had "never had a complaint." Really?? He ought to announce that to the rest of the salon industry. Maybe they could learn something from him, as he's definitely an anomaly. Thom supposedly once received some award for his hair-cutting skills (again, Woohoo!), but the only award I'd give these two is for the rudest, most ugly and abusive treatment of a customer I've ever witnessed.

I made my appointment for touch up on my hairlights and a trim. Thom not only cut my layers EXTREMELY short, my hair was damaged by the highlights that were done. Very disappointed!! Shag haircuts are not in style.....(and never asked for it)
