For a long time, this was one of our favorite happy hours, then it was sold and everything changed; happy hour was boring and lacked seafood (they ditched tuna and other ocean food for quesadillas. And the regular dinners were just so-so.
So, we stopped coming and after about 10 years we finally returned. We figured if they are still in business then maybe they've fixed things.
Turns out the happy hour is back to basics (oysters, clams, calamari, shrimp... SEAFOOD); not much of a bargain though. Service was just okay... the whole visit was good but nothing special.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 1Sep 9, 2012Previous reviewMy guy keeps telling me about this place and how much he thinks I would like it too. He tells me that it's more than just good food. He suggested that we come for HAPPY HOUR when drinks are half price and have a happy hour menu with very fair prices.
I finally made it to HAPPY HOUR and the deals can't be beat.
We got down to business with ordering lots of items off the HAPPY HOUR menu. A dozen gulf oysters for just 6 dollars and they were so fresh tasting that we ended up ordering another dozen. We also had a bucket of steamed clams (very good) and calamari rings (great taste and not too oily). The highlight dish was tuna tataki, so good that we had two orders.
We sat in the dining area that looks out at the marina. The walls are covered with license plates. The wood tables and walls look worn and beaten up. The ambiance is casual and laid back. The servers are friendly. The bar is really busy. Everything you want in a keys restaurant and bar.
With everything so fresh and great HAPPY HOUR specials, I just can't wait to return to Half Shell Raw Bar. - Brittany P.Philadelphia, PA103764221Feb 20, 2024
wonderful happy hour specials, great service & wonderful location.
we stopped in 2/20/24 for happy hour snacks - and ended up getting entrees as well because the seafood was so delicious.
the space is huge ! we sat outside by the water and it was getting a bit chilly due to the wind on the water.
i ordered the clams, which were on special for happy
hour. 16 clams, in a delicious butter sauce.
the hot lips had good flavor, i wish they'd thrown some bacon in em. great HH deal ($6)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jun 19, 2023
Although everything was not perfect... We really enjoyed our meal here. When we returned from our snorkeling excursion, we decided to eat at one of the restaurants near the dock. We were originally going to go to the Boathouse Bar and Grill... But after checkimg the menus at both places... we decided to have dinner at the Half Shell. The prices were much more reasonable.
We were seated outside with a view of the water. The service was great. The food - all but the rice - was delicious! Loved the oysters. The steaks were executed a perfect medium rare. The pasta and shrimp scampi was rich and satisfying. The rice was unfortunately inedible, hard as a rock. Perhaps the rice was sitting too long under a warmer. Our server gave us new, freshly cooked rice and it was much better.
I would definitely recommend this place!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - 1497722Oct 20, 2023
Fantastic experience, my favorite during my time @ key west!
Got a tip from our fishing charter to take our catches to this place and they would cook for us-5 pounds of snapper, grunt, and grouper. The kitchen nailed it!!
Went with a split between fried and blackened, and to be honest I couldn't pick a preference between the two. These came with delicious red potatoes!
Located right next to the pier, enjoy the views with your meal!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 9, 2023
Food is, as one would hope, very fresh. I would say it's reasonably priced as well. Service was attentive. The location and energy are fun - just know you're essentially outside. Maybe reconsider before stopping in on a super hot and overly humid day. Went a couple times the last time we were in the area. Ordered the same drinks on separate visits (frozen daiquiris) and they were totally different. Experiences are relatively inconsistent but it's worth the gamble. I'll definitely be back in the future.

We wanted to try this spot as we saw it was rated pretty highly for seafood and as a raw bar. We had already eaten prior, so we wanted to stop just to try a couple of items. We were seated at the bar that was decorated with a bunch of car plates from different states (pretty cool). We ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell and the oysters rockefeller. The oysters were huge! I'm not particularly a fan of bigger, meatier oysters, but they tasted fresh. Similar to the oyster rockefeller, the buttery mixture was pretty good. I would give this place a shot if you're in the area.
