Had a dinner here with my girlfriends and we had a wonderful time. This is a lovely Korean spot in Park Slope.
We had made reservation, which I def recommendd because this place got packed! We were in the area a bit early so we hung out by the bar for some drinks until our table was ready. We each had the school girl cocktail which was good, tasted mostly of prosecco with a hint of lychee flavor, just kind of wished the lychee had a stronger flavor. The staff was so accomodating and nice. Loved the vibe and ambiance inside the restaurant. It was dimlit, very cozy and romantic.
We started with some small plates to share. The watercress salad, was amazing. I'm actually not a fan of watercress, but the dressing was so good I couldn't stop eating the salad. I need the recipe for the dressing cuz wow it's so good. The scallion pancake and the Dukboki fundido were all delicous as well. For entrees, I ordered Kalbi jji, the meat was tender and it was very flavorful. My friends ordered the Bulgogi and the Maine uni bibimbop. I will say the entrees are not so big but between our entrees and appetizers we were stuffed. We all very much enjoyed our meals.
The only thing to note is that it is a little bit on the pricer end, but it's totally worth for a nice dinner out. The food was amazing, and would definitely come back to try their other dishes.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 194173201Apr 26, 2024
Nothing was amazing, and honestly could have used some more flavor. The kalbi kkochi was really in need of a sauce or something, and the rest of the dishes were not bad but not standout. For the price, I think this wasn't that worth it.
The best dish of the night was the sesame creme brulee - strong sesame flavor and delicious custardHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 30, 2024
Everything was cooked pretty well I think? Unfortunately I can't think of any memorable dishes and whether or not I particularly enjoyed it or not. I do remember not liking the cocktails though.
Given all the different restaurants to try in NY, I would probably not go again. The ambiance was also really dark and felt very cramped.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 2, 2024
I heard really great things about Haenyeo so ultimately I was expecting a little more. The ambiance is super cozy inside and lit by candles so it's dark and intimate. We had a reservation at 615 and shared the japchae and the watercress salad as appetizers. I liked both of these dishes but I was disappointed by the entrees. My husband and I got the tofu bibimbop and tofu chigae and unfortunately both dishes were really bland. Thankfully they bought out a little plate of kimchi and two other plates of banchan. The kimchi saved the bibimbop by adding some flavor. I expected the chigae to be spicy because it explicitly says so but it was actually sour and not at all spicy, no kick no heat.
You're paying for a more upscale dining and I'm not sure it was worth it.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 17, 2024
Elevated Americanized Korean food- definitely on the pricier side so bookmark this place for a nice date night or a special occasion.
We made our reservation via Resy- good thing we did, because this place fills up fast. We were seated at an outdoor table (don't worry, you will be super toasty- the heat lamps are very effective) and scanned the QR code for the menu.
For drinks, my husband ordered the The Squid and the Whale (a tasty sesame oil flavored savory cocktail- we felt it would go well with some rice...!) and I got the School Girl Cocktail (aka alcoholic lychee/grape juice - yum!)
The other cocktails sounded interesting too (some using rhubarb bitters, jalapeño infused tequila..! Nice!)
For our apps, we ordered the oysters (served with brioche toast and topped with seaweed butter) and the Dukboki fundido (a happy marriage of Mexican+Korean cuisine, spicy rice cakes in the red pepper sauce with a blanket of Oaxaca cheese and chorizo). The oysters you can skip- it's 4 small oysters and was very much what you'd expect.
The dukboki is a must- the cheese and chorizo went so well with the spicy sauce, we made sure to scrap the bowl clean.
For our entrees, we shared the Spanish mackerel (grilled with a nice crispy skin, served with toasted seaweed and alfalfa sprouts/gochujang sauce) and the spicy squid bibimbap.
The mackerel was super simple but just SO good, the quality of the fish was fantastic. Wrap that baby up in seaweed with some sauce/sprouts and rice (it comes with a bowl of rice).
The spicy squid bibimbap was so tasty as well (and a treat for the eyes!)
We made sure we had room in our stomachs for dessert- sesame creme brûlée and cinnamon sugar beignets! Really nice way to end the meal.
Service was friendly and attentive (our server was great!)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - 138241728Dec 30, 2023
Made a reservation in advance maybe a week ahead of time for a Friday night. I've been wanting to try Haenyeo for a while, and the timing just worked out. Ended up getting outdoor seating. The space is heated, but the staff don't come out too often.
Dukboki fundido was a fun take on a fundido. Never had an actual fundido at the time, but it was rich, savory, and sweet. Not much chorizo in the dish, and the Oaxaca cheese was a nice difference instead of mozzarella. The tteok was soft and chewy. Haemyul pajeon was smaller than the normal portions you get at more traditional Korean restaurants, but it was still tasty. There was an increased crispiness surface area overall because it was smaller.
Hwe dup bop very good. The fish was fresh. I loved the additional of the perilla and toasted seaweed. Sablefish was okay. Didn't think it was amazing. Reminded me a lot of the braise that you use in lu rou fan. Kalbi jjim was good, fell off the bone, but nothing too differentiating from other places. Crescent duck breast super tender. One of the best dishes of the night.
Portions are on the smaller side, but you are paying for a more upscale dining form. I do think each main dish is not meant as a family style dish, but my group did so anyways so we could try a little of everything.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 23, 2023
There's a dearth of good Korean restaurants in Brooklyn, and while Haenyeo's definitely on the pricier side, we had a great meal here.
We started with the grilled Wellfleet oysters, which were pretty tasty eaten alongside the crispy seaweed butter brioche toast. But the oysters were sooo tiny, and we barely got to savor them before each one was gone. That was a little disappointing. The dukboki fundido was a heartier appetizer and my favorite of the two. The rice cakes were perfectly soft and chewy in that flavorful gochujang sauce, and wonderfully cheesy. While I didn't necessarily need the chorizo bits, I still enjoyed them.
For entrees, we split the hwe dup bap and Maine uni bibimbap. They were delicious and quite complementary as rice dishes go. While you mix up both, the dup bap was more light and refreshing with the bigeye tuna and fluke sashimi, spicy cod and salmon roe, toasted seaweed, and cool veggies. The bibimbap was more comforting, umami, and slightly richer, served hot with the uni, oiji (pickles), egg, mushrooms, and spinach. I loved alternating bites and getting different flavors and textures each time, from the smoothness of the dup bap's fish to the crunchy torched rice of the bibimbap.
No dessert for us as we were pretty full, but overall we left feeling pretty pleased with our meal.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ric A.Queens, NY942683Feb 17, 2024
Great service food as always was amazing.
My always favorite , Dukboki fundido and crispy chicken. unfortunately the dukboki is not a main entree anymore only a small plate appetizerHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 519209529Sep 7, 2023
Lovely ambiance, especially when there aren't many "nice" spots in this area, but the food we tried wasn't that flavorful
As a disclaimer, I'm a vegetarian who eats limited fish so the menu was very limiting for me as there are no vegetarian entree. While the scallion pancake type appetizer was very tasty, it was pretty standard. My sashimi type bowl was fresh but not particularly special and not worth $36 to me. The other two folks with me similarly thought their dishes were good quality, but not memorable
All in all, we may have not ordered the best dishes but with a never ending to eat list, it's very unlikely I'll be returning hereHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - S G.Brooklyn, NY114812May 1, 2024
My husband and I had a lovely dinner here. Ambiance and service were wonderful- it's a perfect date night spot. Drinks were creative but expensive ($19), I particularly liked my "Squid and the Whale" though my husband's drink was mostly just a block of ice. The food was ok -- I was hoping it would be a little more inventive, but it's mostly classic Korean fare. We loved the oysters (although the serving was small -- we got just 4, not 5 like in many of the pictures), the bulgogi, and the sesame creme brûlée. The bindae-tteok; however, was so heavily fried you could barely taste anything. In sum, I think this is a lovely spot but I will probably go elsewhere if craving Korean food.
