Well stocked, well laid out, clean store with friendly staff. I especially appreciated the good quality meat at a reasonable price.

Great place to shop with lower prices and friendly service! Rest quality meats, fresh fruit and vegetables!

Now that I'm living on Holden Beach full time, this Food Lion is my primary grocery store, due to proximity. It's improved over the years, and is well-staffed and generally well-stocked with just about all my grocery needs.
After Hurricane Florence blew through our little town, Food Lion re-opened quickly, and what they initially lacked in fresh produce and meats, they more than made up for with their selection of frozen, canned and dry goods. We were so grateful for them during the aftermath of the storm.
In addition to the basics every grocery has, Food Lion also showcases locally produced goods when possible and in season. And they still have a killer selection of snacks and beverages on hand.
New in 2018: Food Lion to go! Shop online and pick up at the store, no waiting. There are specially marked areas in the parking lot for grocery pickup.
Shop like a local - make sure to check out the weekly Food Lion specials for extra savings and get the MVP card to save even more money.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Oct 23, 2011Previous reviewThe first several years we owned a home at Holden Beach, my husband and I carefully planned our grocery trips since the nearest store was in Shallotte, about 15 miles from the beach. So when the Food Lion opened, I was grateful. Now if we forget a key ingredient for Thanksgiving dinner, it's only a short drive across the bridge and down the causeway.
The Food Lion is not my favorite grocery store, but it serves our needs adequately. (We do have to remember to bring a case of wine from Atlanta, since the local selection leaves much to be desired and decent vintages are way overpriced.)
The best selections are found in the meat department; chicken and pork are good buys but the beef can be hit or miss. Stay away from the fish, though. You're better off heading to Capt'n Pete's Seafood Market for fresh, local seafood. But if you enjoy Mexican fare, you're in luck. Food Lion has an extensive array of south-of-the-border goodies. They also specialize in all things snack-related. You'll find your favorite vacation munchies, along with an above average beer cooler, most likely because this store is highly seasonal and caters to the tourist trade. In the summer months, Food Lion offers an olive bar - nice touch - but it disappears with the crowds come September. Do invest in a Food Lion card; the weekly specials can help shave dollars off the final bill. - Patrick B.Parkville, MD5167213May 21, 2021Updated review
I stopped back in post the covid-19. The employees are still wearing the masks.
The staff is very helpful.
Everything was clean, so I thought out time to update the review.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Aug 17, 2020Previous reviewThis place is not Covid friendly!
Its a Food Lion. It supports the area which means it is not very large, but it does the job. I have used it a few times in the past and never complained.
One problem, it is during Covid and it is not enforcing the Masks Must Be Worn signs that dress the front doors.
So for this review, and only during COVID times, covid concerned people be aware. I will delete after it is over, - Alyssa H.NC, NC02May 20, 2022
honestly i think the staff at this foodlion are the best i've encountered in a long time. they're always there when you need something and they always go the extra mile to make sure the customers are taken care of.

I found this Food Lion to be better than the one near my house back home with a much friendlier staff, better selection of items and more clean inside. I went at both peak times, e.g. the Saturday afternoon when everyone is shopping after checking into their beach rentals, and at quieter times. Was funny to go back Sunday morning and seeing so many items in need of restocking after the mad rush the day before.
At peak, they moved the lines along pretty quickly which was nice.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Cammie B.Plano, TX2617Feb 14, 2018
Prices are comparable with Lowe's which are both consistently about 25-28% higher than Walmart if the things you need aren't on sale. I've got home with expired items and had to return them multiple times.Has no butcher in store and is always out of various cuts of meat unless you get there early. Not the greatest of selections on other things either and normally you'll have to wait in line. It's fine if all I need is a couple of items to fill in until my next big shopping day but that's about all I go there for. The one positive is that the produce is always fresh.

An employee scolded at me for walking the wrong way down the ice cream isle, had a mini panic attack for a minute. If you're looking to get dirty looks and verbally attacked this is the one for you!

A little more expensive than your average Food Lion but it IS the beach. Pretty extensive been selection for a grocery store. Not a great selection but it will get you through your vacation week with the basics. They do have a deli with cooked rotisserie chicken, tenders, etc for an easy post-beach dinner.

This store has been renovated since the reviews previously written. It's a nice store, reasonably priced - especially for one so close to the beach with no competition.
