This is such a great shop. It's small and specialized.
I've been going there specifically for my boots since they were located at their old place. I bought 2 pairs of Dal Bello boots, one for work and one for home. All boots and many skis were interchangeable. We'll, I thought I'd miss that guy but along came Reid.
He has kept those old boots up to date for years. Thank you Reid. I'll be back for some new ones soon and I'll go straight to you.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jana B.Reno, NV142176279Sep 5, 2023
My husband should have reviewed years ago but yet again he had boots fitted and the molded insoles a year or so ago and he is still happy with his purchase...but anyway...we went for the sale over Labor Day weekend and ended up with some skis for me and my daughter and of course while we were there we decided to try on boots for my eldest...yeah we ended up purchasing new ones because Forest did such a great job fitting her and she was too excited to not have them. Love coming here they have a lot of experience and great customer service. We can't wait for the snow to come now...
Thanks again!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - JJ M.San Francisco, CA0124Apr 13, 2024
I have really small feet so it's been nearly impossible to find ski boots that fit, even at shops that supposedly offer "custom-fitted"boots. This shop is serious about fulfilling the needs of your feet. They had the right-sized (my feet are child-sized) boots of good quality, and worked hard to mold the footbeds to fit the unique shape of my feet.

I am so impressed with the knowledge and persistence to help me gain a better fit in my ski boots. Greg figured out about a former injury and that my ankle was not as flexible and not matching up to where the ankle should be in my ski boot. In addition, Greg worked his magic on my liner fit as well as a slight bump out in the toe box due to my toes not matching to the shape of the front of the boot. My feet were much more comfortable in my boots and I was able to last much longer skiing due to these adjustments. Appreciate the attention to all details of the ski boot with my foot/ankle.

Great customer service from Valerie. Specializes in ski race gear. They cram a lot into a little store. We went for the heated ski boot bag, we came away with two helmets (1st generation helmets deserve to be retired to hot spring ski days), Helstra mittens and ski goggles. Also, they only carry the good gear, nothing specific to snowboarding, and just a great local spot for SKI!

Hi, I just wanted to let y'all know that Greg did a great job helping me out a few days ago. I came in without an appointment, looking for a particular boot which happened to be in stock (a Mach1 LV 110 for my very small feet and light weight).
Without an appointment, I expected to simply purchase the boot and be on my way, a faceless customer in a busy crowd.
But Greg saw me, and took the time to ask about my particular interest in the boot... and then went above and beyond to sit me down, get my insoles from my other boots, look at my feet, try everything on, and even adjust my bindings to the new boots!
Really top notch, so please tell him thank you - and that I had three GREAT days skiing in those new boots!! I'll be sure to come back to Start Haus, and send my friends there too - cheers to Greg!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

The better way to start skiing is both with an experience boot fitter and an inventory at your convenience, before the first ski lesson. But what did I know. I started ski racing at 60. I eventually noticed I was crashing on my left turns (called a right footer). Turning left, I spun and fell downhill and I broke a left rib, again, I fell downhill on my right shoulder, I sprained my left knee. I was learning boots the hard way. I also couldn't get close to the slalom gate (pole) going left. I bought boots over the years and it was like buying from a shoe salesman. Nordicas, Technicas, Salomons, Dalbellos, always asking for race boots since my first pair in my 20s. I added a heel lifter to my right foot and shims to keep my right heel from lifting off the boot. After a talk with coach I went to Start Haus. There, they measured my heel to front ankle, told me my right ankle was smaller than my left and my boots should be smaller. I got some Langes 25.5 down from 26.5. They have to be warm to enter them but my coaches noticed an immediate difference. I can turn, balance, and aim my skis better. I didn't know I could ski that well.

I regularly take my skis to the Start Haus for tuning, repair, and waxing, and boot work. I work at a local ski resort,
So this work is very important. I also purchased my Tecnica Mach 1 boots there and had new custom insoles done along with boot fitting and cuff adjustments. They totally know what they are doing. All the shop personnel, both men and women, are skiers. They are organized, professional, well stocked, and do great work on skis and bikes. I highly recommend them! Good parking also.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Thanks for the compliments! We try out best to give a World Cup level tune to everyone who we have the pleasure to serve.
Jan 24, 2022Previous reviewStart Haus is a one stop shop for gear, skis, boots, tuning, waxing, and knowledge. All the staff that work there are pros! They ski and know their stuff! I work at a local mountain teaching skiing and take my gear to Truckee to the Start Haus because they do it right. It's more effort for me and I don't get my employee discount that I would at the resort but it's worth it to have my skis perform. They also would not sell you a boot that was not right for you as many shops do. They are honest and have good prices and do excellent work along with great boot fitting.
Feb 5, 2021Previous reviewI work at a local ski resort in North Lake Tahoe, and ski 70+ days per season. I ski both professionally and recreationally. I have had many tuning and waxing services at a few of the local shops around Truckee. I dropped off two pairs of skis to be tuned and waxed. I was so impressed with the performance my skis! First of all, the tech that looked at my skis, Emily, really gave me great advice on what needed to be done and why. The skis were ready on time, Stan called me to let me know they were ready, and they performed better than they ever have! The tuning and wax were perfect. I will be going back to the Start Haus as a regular customer for sure! Many of my friends and and co-workers are customers of the Start Haus also, and have highly recommended them. Their technique of removing a small portion of the side wall really works along with a perfect bevel of both the base and side edges.

This place is the real deal. I had two pairs of skis tuned and they did a beautiful job. Furthermore, they took the time to ask me what I wanted, and we customized the tune for each set of skis. It's clear they are popular with the ski racing community, but I would recommend them to any recreational skier looking for top notch service in boot fitting, ski shopping, or tuning!
