(Pre-COVID review)
There are tons of good donut options in Chicago, and while I haven't tried many, Do-Rite really impressed me. I am a donut lover and Do-Rite lived up to the hype for me!
I came on a Friday morning around 10am, and a lot of the flavors were already sold out. Be sure to come early if you want the best pick. I got a classic old-fashioned and a pistachio lemon doughnut. I had lower expectations for the pistachio lemon given the neutral reviews about it on Yelp, but I absolutely loved it. The pistachio adds so much texture to the donut - absolute perfection. The old-fashioned was also really good. I'd recommend trying both.
There are 3 rotating flavors of gluten-free donut options, which is awesome. My gluten-free friend hasn't had donuts in years, and he absolutely loved the donut he had.
As a FYI, there's no room for seating inside.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 203276Apr 7, 2023
This is the only place to get a donut in Chicago as far as I'm concerned. You need to order the Buttermilk Old Fashioned. It is everything you will ever need in a donut. It's wonderfully cakey, and moist along with a gorgeous glazed exterior.
Make sure you get a Havana iced coffee along with your old fashioned. Thank me laterHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 305056558Jul 18, 2021
Came here before the breakfast rush of customers lining up for a piece of fresh donut and hot cup of coffee.
this location had a tiny space that 1 or 2 customers can come inside at a time.
i was looking forward to enjoying the donut when i get back to the hotel, but a flashback was stuck to my memory. the lady crew member was working by herself when suddenly an elder guy came from the back door. he was holding a box then grabbing the donuts with his bare hands. i try to tell myself that it is safe to eat the ones the girl put in my box using thongs. yew man! use some gloves or pick the donuts with the thongs ;-(
anyways, the filled donuts were sweet. worth each buck.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jan 1, 2020
Good donuts, fun flavors.
They have a few vegan options.
They were cake type donuts. I got a orange olive oil and a maple chai.
Both donuts were really good for the first few bites, but then after that they were far too sweet for my liking.
If you like really sweet donuts this is a good place for your sweet tooth fix.
Also, there's no place to sit in here- you order in one small area, however, during the day you can eat in the restaurant next door (I think the restaurant opens at night, so they let e donut customers eat in there by day?).
Service was friendly and priced were okay.
Glad I tried this place, but compared to some other amazing donut places in other cities (like voodoo donuts in Portland Oregon) this place wouldn't be a repeater for me.Helpful 15Thanks 0Love this 15Oh no 0 - Michael B.Schaumburg, IL1454Jul 5, 2023
This place was mentioned for its apple fritters. So, I was downtown and had to find my way there, craving a sinful treat. The anticipation quickly turned to disappointment, it was at best an average fritter. It didn't have a crisp edge anywhere on it, the apple wasn't particularly plentiful. I ate about 2/3 when I asked myself why eat something so boring; the rest went into the trash.

We have a 2-day event at my job, and this is one of the vendors there.
I chose the pistachio lemon......delicious!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 7, 2019
Do-Rite certainly does do it right. Their donuts are reminiscent of an old-school, cheap donut joint. Unfortunately, these donuts are not cheap. $20 for half a dozen? Really? It'd be more understandable if they weren't your average donut (not a bad thing by the way--average/classic is sometimes best). But I suppose amidst all of the crazy donut shops, people will pay for the classics. That being said, I was willing to pay the price and I'd pay it again because they're yummy.
The donuts themselves are perfectly fried and void of that icky, old frying oil taste. They're fresh, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. I'm not from Chicago and I really appreciate the texture/jagged shape of the donuts. Simply put, they're fun to eat--a different bite each time!
The best ones my husband I tried were the classic old fashioned and the blueberry old fashioned...okay, the cinnamon sugar was amazing too. Aside from the classics, they have other fun creations like a cheesecake-filled. Next time I'm in Chicago, I'll be stopping here. Yum!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 26, 2020
Been here a few times now and their donuts are quite good, especially the non-vegan ones. No seating at all inside, though there are some benches you can use outside.
The most recent time I went we got 4 donuts, a PB&J (grape jam, to my sister's disappointment - apparently raspberry is a better combo), a blueberry crumb cake (this was my favorite - really good flavor and covered in nice, buttery crumbs - it was recommended by the cashier), vegan orange olive oil (this one was terrible and tasted like baking soda - poor texture, too and a bit dry), and an apple fritter (pretty solid). All the donuts, especially the PB&J and apple fritter, were massive and in total we spent a little over $12.
In the past I have also tried the maple bacon, valrhona chocolate glazed, and boston cream. I'd say the best out of all the ones I've had are the blueberry crumb cake and valrhona chocolate, but to each their own.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 9, 2018
I so love the idea of this donut shop and their wide variety of flavors, including Gluten Free options! I really did enjoy my two donuts too, but unfortunately I think the idea of it all was better than the overall quality and taste of the donuts themselves.
I loved the donut sculpture and little red door at the entrance and how it led into a super tiny and totally adorable mini donut shop with full viewing of all donut flavors and options. Awesome set up! Customer service was on it, quick and kind answering questions, bagging and charging. I ordered the Gluten Free Valrhona Chocolate & Cinnamon Old Fashioned. Out of the 2 the old fashioned was less fried tasting and more enjoyable. The chocolate wasn't bad but it wasn't as indulgent as it look. If I could do it over again I'd try two different ones.
I took my order to go and actually ended up eating half one morning and half the next day morning. The second day was better than the first. It didn't taste as bad for me and the flavors were more present, if that makes sense. So ordering to-go and preserving for a day or so is how I'd recommend going about it. Not the best in Chicago but cute little shop and worth a try.Helpful 16Thanks 0Love this 15Oh no 0 - Aug 16, 2019
Okay if we are going to talk about the best of for doughnuts. This is up there if not number 1. We teeter between do rite and doughnut vault. But... the third visit here made me think this could be #1.
I'll tell you why... the blueberry crumb cake doughnut- really can you say anything more. The care put into that thing, the crumbles a perfect sweet to floury combo. The base had enough blueberry but not too much. Let's talk about the pistachio doughnut, and all their other old fashioned doughnuts. Truly moist dough, soft with a slight crunch on the outside. After 4 of do rotes doughnuts no stomach ache. The oil they use. It's something pure and good to not cause doughnut gut. Love this place and would have to say after all the doughnut shops we have traveled to around the world. I keep coming back to them thinking I think this is the all time best!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
