You know those nice catalog photos of a generator sitting on a clean level lawn, with manicured hedges next to the house? The picture of a straightforward installation and simple electrical hookup? Well, that catalog photo definitely doesn't match our house, barn, and propane tank in three different locations on a steep slope! But Dan Charles and his team figured out how to make it all work. If you are looking for perseverance and problem-solving in a complex situation, they are most likely your very best option for a Generac installation on the mountain.
In the end, we had two different meters and buildings -- with a very long wire pull around the perimeter of the property, up a steep slope, and under a paver walkway -- connected to our propane tank. Previous owners of our house researched a generator option and couldn't find a way to connect the entire property ... but Dan did! In addition to being full of great ideas, he has a big heart and truly cares about people. He recognized our particular generator needs and made sure they were taken care of.
Dan made multiple trips up the mountain even before the start of the work to be sure that we had the right plan. For the original estimate, he spent over an hour walking the entire property with me, brainstorming options. He pointed out the best spot for the generator that I hadn't originally considered: lowest noise, least tree damage danger, and easiest connection point. The final quality of the install is excellent: no shortcuts and rock solid professional electrical. Very responsive to texts and follow-up afterwards as well. We look forward to working with Dan for a long time in the future and greatly appreciate the work that he and his (top notch) crew did for us.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Some of our outlets stopped working in our office. (We have an old building) I found Charles Electric through Yelp and booking an appointment with them was easy. I spoke with Dan to make the appointment and he was very responsive. The morning of the appointment Dan communicated who he was sending over, their name and their car. He sent Marty over and was very pleasant to work with! All smiles and very informative! I apprecitate Dan and Marty for taking the time out of their schedule to help us. Don't think twice about booking with them. They are great and professional!

Let me start this recommendation by saying that Dan Charles (of Dan Charles Electric) is a remarkable guy. He takes such an interest in his clients, is so helpful and responsive, and does everything he can to ensure that any job or project which he's doing is done superbly. And he manages to do all that with an easy manner, warmth and a terrific sense of humor.
In particular, if you want to have either a portable or a standby generator installed, you cannot do better than asking Dan to do it. He is a Generac dealer and Generac-trained technician, and he is dedicated to getting your generator working properly, and to fixing any problem that may arise after installation.
There is no doubt that for any electrical problem or need, Dan Charles Electric deservedly gets 5 stars.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Irwin C.Palo Alto, CA1315Mar 1, 2024

FYI, Dan replied to my review and made some false claims. He claimed I had no permit and an unlicensed installer... He claimed that I stated that the unit broke down AFTER I called him out to service the unit. None of this is remotely accurate or true.
I responded by posting a copy of my permit to prove Dan wrong and quoted my own review describing how the unit broke during a storm. Why Dan would make such easily disproved claims is something I cannot explain.
Yelp quickly removed Dan's post because it was clearly dishonest and violated their policies...
My Generator has now been fixed by a reputable service tech. Thankfully Charles Electric is in my rearview mirror and as such I will now be removing my full response and copy of my permit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Aug 15, 2023Previous reviewI had a new whole house Generac generator installed about a year and a half ago. It worked fine until it died in the middle of the night during a huge storm after just a year. Generac provided a list of service people and I called one named Dan Charles.
Dan came out and explained that it was likely the controller, a $1,000 part that would be covered but as a reimbursement so I had to pay for the unit right then so he could order one (not true I later learned). I wrote him a check that read, 'for controller to be reimbursed'. Generac did not pay very well for service calls, he told me, so he was going to add the replacement of some 'modules' to the repair in order to make the service call worthwhile for him (yes, he was cheating Generac). I just wanted my generator working for the next outage so I didn't question his deal with Generac (I should have read the writing on the wall). He also explained that he offered a $500 annual service program. I said that this sounded good but until the generator was working (under warranty and at no cost to me) this was not anything we could agree to, of course. I was provided no paperwork, no log, no contract, nothing but a business card. I made no agreements of any kind other than to give him the $1,000 that was to be reimbursed.
Dan came back a few days later but said that the new controller did not fix the issue. He would need to come back another day to further diagnose the issue.
Some time later Dan returned and determined that the unit had to be replaced entirely. He also wrote that he was too busy to handle my issue and would pass it off to another tech. The new guy wrote to me once, I responded, and never heard back.
This is probably a good time to drop in a little snippit about Generac. Their product is terrible. Their warranty response is terrible, and their service contractors (Dan Charles) are just as bad or worse. I just laugh when I see their commercials on tv talking about how great the service is...
Go with Kohler.
I ended up sending Dan another note, reminding him of the $1,000 and he wrote back that he would send it soon. He did not. I had to ask him again and he then sent $500 with no explanation as to why he kept $500. He provided no receipt and no record.
I wrote back to him that he shorted me $500 and we argued back and forth on messages.
Dan, at first, said this was for the maintenance program. After I pointed out that the generator has not worked one day since he first showed up, and that he quit on me before the unit was fixed so he could not have started any 'maintenance' anyway, he changed the story to be that I was paying for the service calls. Again, I pointed out that the service call was under warranty and Generac covered that. Also, I reminded him of his comments regarding charging Generac for work and parts that were not replaced. Ripping off Generac was their problem to deal with but I wanted all of my money back and I let him know it clearly.
Dan went into story time at this point, writing things like 'nobody works for free', 'I'm sure you understand', and 'this is more than fair'. At no point did Dan ever claim that he did not agree to reimburse the full $1,000, or that he charged Generac for the warranty calls and parts. Instead he just kept trying to convince me that it was the right thing to do for him to keep $500.
This was a warranty call that Generac was responsible for covering and nothing has been fixed, I don't owe anybody anything and Dan knows it.
Dan kept my $500. I told him that I would report him to Generac (I have) and that his yelp page will have a new addition that he will not like (here it is), but he still refused to give me my money back.
I currently run a manufacturing business but I was a General Contractor for 20 years and I built my own home myself. I know the business. I also know that in circumstances like this, an honest contractor would respond very differently.
In my opinion, Dan Charles is a dishonest and incompetent Contractor and I would not allow him to even set foot on a property that I own.
By the way, Dan, if you want to add a little reply here, go ahead. I will follow up by posting all of our actual messages for all to read and decide for themselves.
You should not have stolen from me, Dan. - John H.Redwood City, CA036Oct 20, 2023
Dan and his team are amazing.
They installed my new Generac back up generator with an attention to detail and a commitment to customer satisfaction that I have seldom seen.
In addition to being generator pros they are also affordable and professional electricians for all projects.
I could not recommend Charles electric more strongly.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lake L.Montara, CA02Feb 14, 2024
Called to confirm our appointment time, never returned call. Day of appointment a no-show. Called and now their voice mailbox is full and couldn't even leave a message. Not a way to run a business. I was on a tight schedule to get some important wiring done and they left me high and dry and scrambling to find another option on short notice. I can understand being busy, especially after a large storm 10 days ago but there's no excuse for lack of communication.

Hi Lee, it’s Dan Charles. I just sent you an email. Are you sure you called us? If we drop the ball I’m sorry it’s a little hard getting 300 calls a day after the storm and if you did call us and I dropped the ball next time just call me don’t die on the hill too many people want to go on yelp and say what a bad experience they had even though there’s 10,000 positive reviews. We’re not perfect and every once in a while we do drop the ball we’re human, but you have my number don’t die on the hill. Please give me a call thank you and again again sorry for any hardship. Best wishes.

In the aftermath of last week's wind storm and subsequent power outage, we found that our generator was not working. We called Dan and he went out of his way to prioritize our call despite the huge number of calls he had to deal with. He and Matt tried mightily to get our unit to work but it could be repaired on the spot. After much discussion, it was decided that our generator needed replacement. Dan did copious amounts of research suggesting several options for us. His kindness and excellent customer service was so appreciated, especially during the stressful time without power. We highly recommend him to anyone with electrical service needs.

I called on the day of the day of the "River Storm" in March 2023 for emergency services. My elderly clients Generac was not starting and the power went out from all of the fallen trees. I received some of the best help I have ever received from any technician.
He walked me through the process and gave me the secret advice you never receive, get a can of carburetor quick start.
I did and sprayed it in and within two seconds the generator started right up and my customers were so pleased because the PGE was out for parts of 3 days.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Business owner information
