Never a bad meal here seriously. I do wish some of the portions were bigger sometimes but it's okay :,). Service here is always attentive. I last came here with my sister. We sat near the open kitchen and the overall vibe was perfect upstairs.
Ernest typically has rotating menu items as well as new ones. All the dishes we order were plated to perfection with outstanding flavor.
It was my first time tasting the ceviche type tosata (i forget what it's called). So good, almost sad I had to share.
Mushrooms with crème fraiche dish was delicious as well. mushrooms fried perfectly.
The fried rice was my least favorite. I like my fried rice with more hard and fried.
Pate with baguette was delicious. I don't prefer pate when it is super gamey. This was perfect.
Wish the uni toast was bigger, but I understand :). So good, I could eat 5.
Tomato salad was very unique. Flavors were different and I kept wanting to eat more.
& did I even come to Ernest if I don't get 2 desserts. I love that they change the shaved ice flavors every time. This time was concord grape and black sesame? I believe. I could not stop eating this. We also got the soft service with hard chocolate shell. A must order every time. Do get 2 desserts. Love this place. might need to make a reso now.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Sep 19, 2022Previous reviewI've been here around 6 times now. I was very impressed. From the food, to the drinks, to the service. Definitely coming back for more. The seafood items on their menu were fresh & prepared perfectly. Lots of Asian influence in their dishes.
I just want to talk about the dessert. THEY ARE ALL SO GOOD. If you're w/ more than 2 people just get all 3. They typically have the ice cream w/ hard shell & caramel?sauce, A shaved ice, & cheesecake. Just get them all!!

Had an amazing dinner at Ernest to celebrate my friends birthday dinner. We opted in for the pre rice menu that let the kitchen cook for us and it was totally worth it.
To start my meal I got the makrut lime fizz cocktail and it was so good. I didn't know how I would like it since it had egg white and sour cream as ingredients but it was delicious.
The dishes here had such a nice variety and I was impressed at the flavor and unique profile of each dish. Definitely recommend doing the pre fixe option.
Appreciated how nice the service was as well and for sharing what each dish was as it was a lot. Truly an amazing dining experience.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 5, 20241 check-in
The Parker house rolls! Get them!! I was skeptical but they were the best thing we ate.
The other highlights included the beef tartare w fish roe ("sushi rice" on the menu) and the katsu w pesto. Also enjoyed the scallion pancake and pate. The soft serve sundae was also surprisingly good, we got it as part of a bday celebration but probably would not pay $13 for it.
I thought the garlic fried rice and tuna tostada was just fine.
Our server was soooooo nice and awesome at explaining all the dishes in detail. I wish I got her name so I could give her a shoutout hereHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 23, 2024
My boyfriend and I came here last Friday. I loved the overall vibes of this restaurant. It has a modern industrial-esque interior.
We went with the chef menu, which included 3 courses and dessert. For drinks, we ordered the Strawberry Paloma and Makrut Lime Fizz. The paloma had a smokiness to it. The taste really reminded me of bonito flakes on takoyaki. The lime fizz was delicious and my favorite out of the two. In my boyfriend's words, it was like a "key lime sorbet." It wasn't overly sour or sweet; it was perfect.
For the first course, we had a variety of items from the raw bar and seafood categories. As someone who loves raw fish, the Bluefin Tuna Tostada was really good. The tuna tasted fresh and flavorful. The base provided a nice crunchy texture. The Uni Toast was quite different and unique. The toast itself was crispy and warm. The uni gave a nice contrasting texture and lightness to the heaviness of the buttery toast.
Everything else (Aonori Doughnuts, Jamon Iberico Croquettes, Hog Island Oyster, Sushi Rice, and Mexican Shrimp Coctel) from the first course was delicious. If I had to choose my least favorite from this course, it'd be the coctel. Although still good, it just didn't stand out as much as the others.
For the second course, we had the Parker House Rolls, Spring Vegetables, and Hawaiian Hearts of Palm. The rolls were warm, soft, slightly salty, and buttery. The vegetables looked, smelled, and tasted like a garden. When I put the artichoke in my mouth, I was greeted with different textures. It was crunchy, crispy, and soft.
The hearts of palm, unfortunately, were not a hit for us. We are not fans of the numbing and tingling sensation from certain peppers, and this dish had sansyo. I really wanted to like this dish, especially given the sweetness from the strawberries and subtle nuttiness from the black sesame. However, all I tasted was the sansyo. This just came down to personal preference.
For the third course, we had the Grilled Hanger Steak and Koshihikari Fried Rice. My favorite from this course were the fries. They were crispy and well seasoned. No need for any additional sauce. Just perfect. The steak also came with sansyo. Our server was so considerate and put the sauce on the side since she knew we weren't a fan of it. The sansyo in this dish was milder compared to the one in the hearts of palm. My boyfriend didn't mind it, but I was still not a fan.
The rice was interesting and different. I love fried rice, and I love cheese. I don't think I ever had those two together until now. I was a little unsure of it at first (most likely because I was so full at this point), but I enjoyed it.
For the grand finale, the Hazelnut Soft Serve Sundae. This was so, so yummy. It was sweet and a great end to our meal.
Our server, Courtney, was amazing. Overall, we had a delicious dinner and a great experience!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Apr 17, 20241 check-in
My husband and I have been wanting to come to Ernest for SO LONG and we finally got a chance to on our 8 year anniversary!
We ordered:
-uni toast: super small...tasted delicious but not worth it for the price and portion size.
-oysters: 6/10. I love oysters but this was just ok.
-hangar steak: 9/10. Cooked to PERFECTION and the sauces paired perfectly.
-tuna tartare: 4/10. This was just okay. Nothing too special.
Overall, it was a good experience but the service was very slow even on a Wednesday night. Pretty pricey for the amount of food that we ordered. Total came out to around $350.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 22, 2024
When we got a notification for an opening at 5 PM we were so excited and snagged it immediately. We went with a group of 4, so we got to try a lot of different apps and entrees as well as dessers from the menu!
My favorite was the croquettes and the pate, especially with the scallion pancakes! The tonkatsu was crunchy and flavorful.
The only thing was we felt really pressed to order the drinks and food, and we weren't told that the sparkling water was 7 dollars per bottle, yikes- and we were poured 3 bottles in total.
The food was still amazing and I can't wait to come back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 1084344237Apr 5, 2024

I came here for dinner one night with one of my coworkers. I can't remember what this was place was called before, but I believe it was a coffee shop. My coworker, Vivian, was already there when I arrived. Parking around the area is kinda sketchy because there's a bunch of homeless people that camp around the nearby park...but I was able to park 2 blocks away so not too bad.
Here's what we got for dinner to share:
1. Tempura oyster mushrooms.
2. Pork neck tonkatsu
3. Parker house rolls
4. Miso black cod
5. Shaved ice for dessert
Both the food and service were excellent. The staff are super professional and very efficient. As soon as a table is empty, it gets cleaned right away and they pay attention to when water cups get low. There was a 2 hour time limit (not sure if that's how it is now), which was accurate since it took some time for the food to come. Everything we got tasted great, but I'd probably not get the shaved ice next time. The parker house rolls were fluffy and the butter that came with it was divine. The tempura oyster mushrooms were crunchy and I really like the dipping sauce that was provided. The cod was super flaky and delicious, I wish I had gotten my own since it's pretty small. The pork neck tonkatsu was tender and the sour pickles paired with it very well. Would definitely return here.Helpful 3Thanks 2Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 21, 2024
Very cool experience. Tucked away on a corner of Bryant St in the industrial Mission/SoMa area, this modern michelin-y spot is definitely worth a try!
I know what others may say but that $27 uni toast was divine and worth the splurge. Honestly, I slightly regret even ordering any main courses because the starters were filling enough for 2! Sushi rice was killer and those Parker house rolls were so tasty buttery fresh. The fried rice was definitely unique and paired perfectly with the crispy crab cake and aioli and lemon. The cocktails were fun but food was definitely the star here.
The ambiance was surprisingly lively and perfect for smaller parties! Service was also outstanding and even seated us when we arrived 30 min before our reservation time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mie Z.Concord, CA063May 7, 2024
Most places that are hyped up end up being ok, surprisingly this place was absolutely worth all the hype! Every dish was delicious!! We ordered the bread, spring veggies, fried rice, steak, fish, cheesecake, cocktails and after dinner coffee. Every item was well prepared and absolutely delish!! I hate going to the city but I will for this place!!

Everything was soooooo goooooooooood.
Treated my boyfriend out for a birthday dinner and got all the works (tasting menu upgrade with uni toast/caviar and beverage pairing) and it was soooo worth it.
All the items that were served were all
uniquely memorable, but my faves were: uni toast, spring vegetables, and aonori doughnuts. The quality of ingredients were well pronounced consistently throughout the menu and evident that every ingredient served a purpose.
The service was very smoothly ran & very well timed in the smallest details - placing utensils, pacing out courses alongside with pouring out wine. Shout out to all the front of house folks here!
Ambiance here is definitely super relaxed but also refined in the right places.
Overall still dreaming about my time at Ernest and 10/10
do reccomend!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 28, 2024Updated review
Love the food at Ernest. It was a bit easier for me to snag a reservation this time on Resy compared to last year.
They had a few new menu items that we tried.
Blue fin tuna tartare - served on milk bread. Tasted like poke and fresh.
Scallop - scallop ceviche on a large chip. Fresh
Sushi rice with beef - always a goodie
Parker bread buns - always a goodie
Dungenous crab - very tasty with the aoli.
Wagy sando- they have a limited batch of these apparently. We were the first table to order so we were lucky to indulge
Soft serve - always a goodie.
Love the food at Ernest SF. Highly recommend.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Apr 3, 2022Previous reviewReservations are hard to come by here. They open up at midnight a month in advance , so make sure to give yourself ample time to make the reservation.
I salivated over the photos and reviews for about a year before I pulled the trigger on a reservation and boy was I glad to finally have tried Ernest !
Reservations were at 5pm on a Sunday evening , parking was not bad was able to find street parking pretty easily.
Now on for the meal :
1) wagyu Miyazaki beef sandwich -$73. It is pricey, but very delicious. Husband and I agreed this was the best item that we tried. The beef was fatty and tender and lightly fried. The bread was buttered and toasted and the sandwich came with this creamy mayo based dipping sauce that complicated the sandwich very well.
2) ikura beef tartare - I am normally not a tartare person, but the beef and ikura complimented each other well on top of the sushi rice and seaweed.
3) uni lo mein - , the noodles were served Al dente , and the uni sauce was flavorful. An enjoyable dish.
4) Parker house rolls- soft, fluffy, warm and taste like the best milk bread I ever had. Served with cultured butter. Amazing.
5) uni toast - the uni toast was good but the serving was so small that I would not order this the next time
6) the soft serve ice cream - came with a chocolate magic shell drizzled on top, and a caramelized sauce. Super tasty and delectable
7) basque cheesecake - this is a bit unique. It's actually served rare , so the cheese is still kinda runny. The cheese actually tasted kind of sour like a Meyer lemon so it wasn't what I was expecting. I would pass on this next time.
Overall , we really enjoyed all the food here and would definitely come back. We enjoyed the dishes here more than Rich Table (the chefs Alma mater). Would come back to get the wagyu sando again , the rolls again and prob to try some other dishes. Highly recommend this place !
