This is one of the best dessert shops in Chicago with exceptional gelato. My wife and I were extremely indecisive on our first trip to Black Dog but the attendant was super patient and extremely nice in letting us sample a number of their different flavors.
I settled on the goat cheese caramel and popcorn flavors and both were excellent. The goat cheese definitely had a unique taste but not over-powering. The popcorn was also fun with chunks of popcorn mixed in.
Definitely check this place out when you're in Wicker Park!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sarah V.Midtown, St. Louis, MO2932613Feb 26, 2024
Have been going here for years now as my family has a black dog and we thought it was fun to visit "his shop". It's a small shop with quick counter service and no indoor seating, but if it's nice out they have outdoor seating, and the neighboring blocks and wicker park are lovely so I tend to get mine in a cone and walk around when possible.
Favorite flavors are the Sweet Corn (sounds odd i know but so good), the Raspberry Chocolate Truffle, and the Dark Chocolate. The sorbets are usually good too, especially on really hot days when you want something lighter.
Yesterday, my two scoops in a sugar cone came out to $7. Honestly, a price I'm happy to pay for a treat from a small local shop that I'm happy to still have open in the area!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 12, 2023
Gelato is just as popular as ice cream around here. If looking for the best this is one of the original places. Black Dog Gelato has been here and done that as far as frozen desserts. Prices are high because of course they are so fuck it. Try some anyway because it's some cool stuff.
Because it was hot I needed to cool off so I stopped in. It's about $6 for a regular cup, which is a lot. That's as in the price, but they fit a lot in the cup as well. Lots of flavors to choose from. Some non dairy, and I got the Dairy Free Lemon Passionfruit. Cool flavors. This was both sour and sweet. Could have gotten more but it's expensive. That's the only bad thing about it.
Head to the Ukrainian Village one because the other closed. It's all good except for the prices. The cool thing is there's non dairy choices, and you can get to go pints if you want some for later, and per ounce it's more value.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jan 12, 2023
Black Dog Gelato has two locations - this one in Ukrainian Village and one in Logan Square. They offer a variety of flavors, rotating and seasonal (such as Espresso Chip, Yuzu Licorice Sorbet, Coconut Almond Chip, and even dairy-free options) - even the pickiest eater will find a flavor they'll like!
They also offer a Pint Club membership, where you get a pint every month, discounts, promotions, and early access to special menus.
We came here after having a meal in the area - the place is small, but clean, and there were only a handful of tables. Staff were very friendly, and you can sample the flavors in their case until you find one (or, several) that you'd like to order.
We ordered:
+Mint Cookie - filled with Oreo cookies and peppermint oil
+Malted Vanilla Pretzel - an Ovaltine-flavored gelato with milk chocolate covered pretzels
+Mango Hibiscus Sorbet - with mangos and hibiscus flower
+Raspberry Cider Sorbet - raspberries and apple cider vinegar
+Kibana Sorbet - made with kiwis and bananas
The gelato was thick and creamy, and you can get yours in a cup or a cone.
Limited restricted street parking in the area.

Everything I've had here has been incredible.
Service is always good but I don't really care... the ice cream is the star of the show. It's expensive but it's some of the very best ice cream I've ever had, and I LOVE ice cream.
The flavors are interesting but not too crazy for most people (personally I would be open to even more unusual flavors). It's not too icy and not too rich. Does not leave a buttery film like some ultra-rich ice creams do (not good). The flavors are strong, balanced, well thought-out and just exceptionally delicious. Have been twice since I moved to Chicago 2 months ago and I'll be back again, hopefully soon.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 18, 2023
Walked over here while waiting for our lunch down the street. I really wanted to try the goat cheese cashew caramel and I don't regret it one bit. It was so yummy, I wish I could've taken a pint home with me! My daughter ordered the birthday cake, which she enjoyed. $4.60 for a kids cup. The service could've been better. The shop is decorated with beautiful plants. I'd be back for more goat cheese gelato!

Great gelato sport with some very unique flavors. The staff was so nice allowing me and my boyfriend to sample before we picked our flavors and answering any questions we had. The inside is very small but they have a clear menu and a few things like merch to buy. I got a kids birthday cake scoop and it was delicious. Can't wait to go back!

I love the unique flavor options at Black Dog Gelato! I've been a couple of times and service is always friendly and lets me try a few different flavors to help me decide what I want. Definitely recommend if you are in the area!

One of the best gelato places in the area. Super creamy and delicious. I love coming here for a quick treat.

This place has the most fun selection of flavors. I have loved trying the cookie butter, cream cheese, birthday cake, hazelnut crunch, and many others. I really like how this place uses metal spoons for tasters instead of plastic! There isn't a ton of seating but the place is cute and has a small outdoor seating area. Even when there is a line, things move quickly and the service is snappy. The downside to this place is that it can be very pricey. Definitely not a budget dessert.
