Our server was incredibly attentive and had a knack for recommending the perfect cocktails to suit our tastes. We decided on the espresso martini, divine dragon, and tropical itch--all of which were nothing short of stunning. The presentation of each drink was a visual feast, truly elevating our experience. Our only quibble would be with the strength of the drinks; we felt they could have packed a bit more punch, especially considering their price point.
That said, the ambiance and vibe of the place more than made up for it. It's clear a lot of thought has gone into creating an atmosphere that's both welcoming and exciting. If a tiki bar experience is what you're after, look no further. This spot has it all: charm, style, and a flair for delightful concoctions that are sure to impress.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Amanda G.Vallejo, CA1055394Mar 17, 2024
Had a great time at the Tonga Room! Was pretty pricey but would absolutely go back. Went on Saturday night so there was live music which was cool. Great cover band. Cover charge was $15 if you wanted to sit and eat. Free if you wanted to stand and get drinks at bar. Me and my date got the pupu platter and split it which was $66. All the food on there was good but $60 is a lot for what was given. Drinks were to be expected. Around 15-22$. 4 drinks and the platter plus cover fee for two people ended up being $200.
Great atmosphere. Loved the music. Loved the "rain". If you're deciding whether or not you should go this is your sign to go.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 4, 2024
A fun night out. We went on a Thursday evening and it was packed. They don't allow you to make reservations for small groups, so we waited outside in line just to add our names to the queue. Since we were planning on dining there, we had to pay a cover fee, which wasn't ideal but makes sense given the live music. After we got our names on the list, we got drinks by the bar while we were waiting. Their drinks are STRONG and very tasty. We got the Zombie 1934, the Hand Shaken Colada, and the Divine Dragon, all beautifully presented.
When we got seated for dinner, we had a nice view of the live performers on the water. We ordered the Pupu Platter, Sweet Onion Beef, Spicy Basil Chicken, and Mushroom Fried Rice. I enjoyed the short ribs and ahi tuna poke tostadas on the pupu platter and all the dishes tasted food, but the price of each dish was just so expensive. Over $60 for the pupu platter and over $30 for the chicken and beef just seemed exorbitant especially considering we had also paid cover to get in the restaurant.
It's pretty loud and hard to have conversations at this restaurant due to the live music. I'm thinking next time I'll come for the bar only because their drinks were great.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Jan 22, 2024
When I was told we were having our company kickoff event at a restaurant in the Fairmont, the Tonga Room was about the LAST thing I was expecting ahahaha. The best comparison I could make was it was like being in line for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. Tiki bar energy but a little darker.
It was the most polarizing room I could possibly imagine. 55% of the employees hated the place, 45% LOVED it. It became a kind of us vs them mentality. I'm really shy and insecure so I was just kind of like an NPC in this situation, but it was exhilarating to observe. I would sort of guess who would be in which camp. You can tell a lot about a person if they love or hate the Tonga Room tbh.
There is literally a 75 foot pool in the middle of the place ahahaha like why??? That's just the Tonga Room being the Tonga Room I guess. Tonga gonna Tonga.
There is unnecessarily a platform that floats out in the middle of the completely unnecessary pool, and that's where the band was playing. I was standing in the corner of the dance floor because I'm really shy and was just like is anyone else seeing this? The band is just floating out there rocking out, rattling off hit after hit after hit.
I began to realize that two unnecessary things can fuse together to become super necessary. I didn't know how bad I needed the band on the floating platform in the pool until it was right there in front of me. I couldn't get that Henry Ford quote out of my head "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'" Big Hen might have been onto somethin...
I wasn't drinking, but I know the drinks were strong because everyone was LOADED ahahaa. Even my big homie, Big Fhim, was pretty toasted and I've never seen anyone handle their liquor like Big Fhim! As I'm sure you can imagine, Big Fhim was in the Pro-Tonga camp. Really makes you wonder.......
People were hating on the food but it honestly got the job done. I think they were hating on the Tonga room just to hate. It's easy to hate on the Tonga Rooms of the world.

Always bumpin at this joint! The Fairmont is a refined hotel. The fun and playful Tonga Room makes me want to give the hotel the tag line: business on the top floor, party on the bottom floor!
Drink prices match the location and you get a fun umbrella in your tiki beverages :)
My absolute favorite thing about this joint is the bad on the boat that floats out into the middle of the water. I'm gonna figure out how to get on that boat one day :)
I ate here a long while ago and the food was good. This is more of a last call drink place for me at the end of a Saturday night. Have fun, dance a little and enjoy the band!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jan 28, 2024
The Tonga Room is over the top and true to the theme, I thought it was really fun. My friends and I went on a Saturday night (no reservations allowed for parties under 10) we waited for an hour to be seated. We hung out in the bar while we waited. The drinks are sweet and all come pretty decorations. There were about 12 drink options to choose from, it looked there was a full bar back there but I didn't see anyone ordering anything other than what was on the menu.
There was a GREAT band playing, the singer had a huge range and playing a variety of genres spanning decades. Lol like other reviews have mentioned the band floats on a boat in the middle of the pool. There's a rain effect every so often... it's just a fun place overall.
I honestly don't think that the food is what draws people to the Tonga room, it wasn't bad but also wasn't anything special.
Overall I think that Tonga room is such fun experience, take it for what it is, enjoy the music, dance with friends and try a new drink!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 2 - 28788Mar 30, 2024

LIVE MUSIC DINNER EXPERIENCE. Wonderful restaurant to visit for good Asian Fusion dishes in a beautiful tiki-themed lounge with live music, dance floor, and rain/thunderstorm!
AMBIANCE: 5/5. The restaurant is located inside the Fairmont San Francisco Hotel. We got a room at the hotel, and booking the Tonga ALL Night package at Fairmont also guarantees a reservation at this restaurant beautifully located on top of a hill overlooking the city. The downside is parking may be tough to find, but there is some street parking across/around the hotel or down the hill. Valet service is also available. This tiki-themed restaurant has a tropical island vibe with thunder and rainstorms over the river in the middle of the room, and there's live music playing while you have their delicious Polynesian cuisine. An absolutely fun dinner experience.
SERVICE: 5/5. This place does get busy, but the staff were trying to be accommodating and work as fast as they could to give everyone in the room the best experience.
FOOD: 5/5. For appetizers, the Tonga Pupu Platter is a must-try so you can try a variety of their appetizers (Korean short rib, vegetable spring rolls, ahi tuna poke tostadas, citrus pepper chicken wings, edamame). For main dishes, we got the Coconut Curry Seafood (prawns, calamari, scallop, mussels, bell peppers, yellow curry) + Sweet Onion Beef (tender beef, onion, scallions, bean sprouts, broccoli) + Spicy Basil Chicken (chicken, peppers, chili, sweet basil, shrimp paste) + Stir-fried Garlic Asparagus. For dessert, the mango panna cotta (panna cotta, fruits, citrus sauce, lemon crispy meringue) was pretty good. All-in-all: The dishes can be expensive, but all were so delicious & the cocktails were so cute and actually strong.
OVERALL: 5/5. Food and drinks here may be expensive, but the experience with live music and the quality of the dishes were exceptional and worth it. This is definitely a great place to visit if you're a tourist, have family/friends visiting, or if there's an occasion to celebrate - worth checking out the Tong Room dinner experience!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 1 - 3632833545Apr 13, 20241 check-in
It's total kitschy fun. Are the drinks or food excellent? No. Is it really overpriced? Yes. If you want a nicer experience, there's a lovely restaurant upstairs. However, it doesn't have the fun of the Tonga room. The service is ok, and they take themselves very seriously. I'd skip diner and do drinks just for fun, then have a nice meal upstairs.

Came here for a private networking event with the entire room closed off from public. There was no coat check here. I noticed the same crew working at the place with some familiar faces.
Drinks are okay. Their wines are decent. Food served was a little salty and greasy. But most people were just talking the whole time.
I like the way they set up the drink stations. Plenty of them around the entire space. They rearranged the floor with some standing tables for discussions. Open bar was nice. Plenty of wines floating around. It was so good to catch up with some old friends and get to know some new faces. It was fun.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1May 21, 2023Previous reviewDropped by for a Friday evening party with friends. Here are our thoughts:
- this place has a wonderful ambiance. The pool and the floating boat is just super fun. It 'rains' over the pool with flashes of 'thunders'
- surprisingly, this place is super kids friendly
- live band on the boat is a cool setting
- services here are super good.
- all drinks and food are great. We had some chicken wings to start and share. I ordered the salmon and the asparagus. Delicious. Ordered some dessert after. Great also.
- good dance area with better view at the band
The only issue I had was the music. The music on Friday was not very 'dancable', which was very disappointing. We came in ready and hoping to dance.
Overall, good experience. Love fairmont SF also.
Btw, if you are not staying in the hotel on the day you show up, they will charge you $15 per person. The valet parking I think is about $20 per hr? But worth it though. Super safe. Just be prepared to walk a little
